A black dress with a white collar is pretty classic, but Wednesday Addams’ black dress is gothic-looking, and really kind of cute and trendy.

If you want your own Wednesday Addams dress, then follow this easy tutorial to turn an old basic black dress into a brand-new Wednesday Addams dress.

Tools and materials:

  • Old black dress
  • White collar fabric
  • Ruler
  • Fabric chalk
  • Pattern paper
  • Scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
Disassembling black dress

1. Disassemble your old black dress

Start this project with an old basic black dress, and cut off the top of the dress a few inches below the armhole.

Now cut the bottom part of the dress into two sections at the waistline: One for the new dress sleeves and the bottom-most part for the skirt of your new dress.

Resizing the skirt

2. Resize the skirt

Cut the skirt piece open along a side seam. Fold one skirt piece in half lengthwise.

Measure the circumference of your waist, divide that by four and add 1 centimeter (0.39 inches).

Mark that measurement along the bottom hem of the skirt from the folded edge of your skirt piece.

Now draw a diagonal line from that point to the waistline seam.

Resizing the skirt

Mark 2 centimeters (0.78 inches) from the bottom along the fold, and connect that mark with the first mark on the bottom hem.

Resizing the skirt

Draw one more diagonal line from the top of the first line to 2 centimeters (0.78 inches) along the top of the skirt.

Resizing the skirt

Pin the layers in place so they don’t shift, and cut along the marked lines.

Resizing the skirt

Use your cut skirt piece as a template to make a matching piece from the other half of the skirt fabric.

Resizing the skirt

Place the front and back skirt pieces together, with right sides facing in, and sew both side seams.

Resizing the top

3. Resize the top

Take in the top if you need it to be more fitted.

4. Make the white collar

Fold the top in half so that the back center and front center are at each side, with the armholes in the middle.

Making the white collar

Trace the top edge of the top piece onto pattern paper.

Now, hand draw the rest of the collar shape. Make the collar a bit more elongated and pointed that a normal collar would be.

I made my collar 4 centimeters (1.57 inches) wide at the straight end and 6 centimeters (2.36 inches) at the pointed end.

Making the white collar

Cut out the collar pattern and then cut out 4 collar pieces from white fabric.

Making the sleeves

5. Make the sleeves

From your last piece of old dress fabric, cut out your sleeve shape according to the length you want.

Making the sleeves

Fold each sleeve piece in half and sew the straight open edge, with right sides facing in.

6.  Put it all together

Sew the dress top to the skirt, sew the sleeves in place.

Assembling

Attach the collar to the top neckline.
