DIY peppermint lip scrub is perfect for reviving and exfoliating dry lips, and is especially nice to have on hand during the cool months of the year! This lip scrub only requires three inexpensive natural ingredients to make and can be whipped up quickly!

Dry lips are one of the many unfortunate symptoms of dry and cold weather. I’m sure you experience this every year too, especially in the winter, but it can happen any time of year. There are so many lip treatments on the market, as well as different lip balms that are supposed to revive dry lips that, in my experience, don’t work that well. One of the best ways I’ve found to revive dry lips to to exfoliate, then use a moisturizing natural lip balm.

Sugar scrub is an excellent way to gently exfoliate the lips. The sugar helps to lift and remove dead skin, and the coconut oil helps to moisturize. Even better, the ingredients are natural, and if any of the scrub gets into your mouth, you don’t have to worry! I like to add peppermint essential oil to my lip scrub because it offers a cooling sensation and helps to reduce inflammation that can be caused by the exfoliation process. not to mention, it also smells amazing!

This peppermint lip scrub also makes for a great homemade gift! Whether it’s for the holiday season, a special occasion or just because, this is a great, inexpensive gift option! Place it in a cute jar like this to give to someone special! Now, let’s talk more about how to make the easiest DIY peppermint lip scrub!

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Airtight container

INGREDIENTS

  • Granulated Sugar: Granulated sugar helps to gently remove dead skin from the lips. I prefer to use organic cane sugar, but any sugar you have will work. Note that different types of sugar have a different grit, if you will. Regular granulated sugar has a finer texture, while cane sugar, or even coconut sugar, have larger sugar crystals. Experiment to see what texture you like best!
  • Coconut Oil: I like to use organic unrefined coconut oil because that’s what I usually have in my kitchen, but any coconut oil will do. You can use fractionated coconut oil if you want, but you will want to use less than this recipe calls for, otherwise the texture will be too runny.
  • Peppermint Essential Oil: Be sure to do your research and choose a reputable essential oil company that you trust. There are a few essential oil companies I like, but one that is affordable that I like to use is Plant Therapy. Their organic peppermint essential oil is great!

HOW TO MAKE DIY PEPPERMINT LIP SCRUB

In a small mixing bowl, add the sugar, coconut oil and peppermint essential oil. Mix with a spoon thoroughly.

Add the lip scrub into an airtight container, preferably glass, and store at room temperature for three to six months!

HOW TO USE DIY PEPPERMINT LIP SCRUB

  • Using a clean finger, remove about a pea sized amount of lip scrub from the container.
  • Gently massage it all over the lips for 30 seconds to a minute.
  • Remove the lip scrub with a damp washcloth.
  • Apply a moisturizing lip balm immediately after to lock in the moisture.

NOTES

  • I prefer to use organic ingredients in this recipe, but any granulated sugar and coconut oil will work just fine!
  • Start with one tablespoon of coconut oil and mix. Test the consistency with your fingers. If you prefer a thinner consistency for your lip scrub, add another tablespoon of coconut oil.
  • It’s important to use quality essential oils in this recipe. I like Plant Therapy, but do your research and find a brand you feel comfortable using.
  • If you’re using the lip scrub on kids, it’s probably best to omit the peppermint essential oil. In place of the essential oil, you can use dried, crushed mint leaves or leave the mint out all together!
  • Other essential oils like lavender would be nice in this recipe as well.
  • It is normal to feel a tingling sensation after using this DIY peppermint lip scrub.

CAN I ADD ANYTHING ELSE INTO THIS RECIPE?

There are so many different ways you can change this recipe to fit your needs. Here are a few ways to enhance this peppermint lip scrub!

  • Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E oil is extremely moisturizing and can help to prevent dry skin. By adding Vitamin E oil into this lip scrub, it can enhance the benefits!
  • Natural food coloring: To make this scrub extra fun, you can add in some natural food coloring, like a nice green or blue, to indicate what “flavor” the lip scrub is! It’s fun to do this for gifts or if you have kids!
  • Honey: Honey is a great addition to this lip scrub. It also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which are great for dry, cracked lips. Honey can also a great antioxidant!
  • Dried herbs or fruit: As I mentioned above, you can add in some crushed, dried mint leaves. You could also add in freeze dried strawberries or orange peel powder to change up the scent.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE AN EXFOLIATING LIP SCRUB?

Just as you exfoliate your face or body, it’s important not to do it too often. Because your lips are delicate, I would only use this lip scrub one to two times per week. If you feel you need to exfoliate more, be sure there are at least two days in between.

Nighttime is the best time to exfoliate your lips because you can ensure the moisture has enough time to penetrate the lips fully, but you can also use it before applying lipstick or lip tint!
