Hey, guys. In this quick tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a DIY eyeglass case out of potholders. These potholders are available at just about any dollar store, they’re super cheap—I got mine two for a dollar—and the whole process takes only five-ten minutes!

If any of that interests you, grab a potholder and keep reading for my favorite method on how to make an eyeglass case!

Tools and materials:

  • Potholder
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Fabric clips or pins
  • Decorative pieces
  • Hot glue
  • Pliers (optional)
Cheap potholders from the dollar store

1. Choose your potholders

Any potholder will do! I’m going to be using a solid one because I want to jazz it up with all kinds of embellishments, but print potholders are pretty cool, too.

Cutting off the tag

2. Cut off the tag

Make sure to cut off the tag pretty close to the edge.

Using fabric clips to keep the fold in place

3. Fold and add fabric clips

Fold your potholder in half and use fabric clips to keep it in place. If you don’t have fabric clips, you can use pins or anything else at your disposal. Keep the left end open and unclipped.

4. Sew up

Sew down the seam line that’s already there. End with a backstitch on the bottom right corner and the top left corner.

5. Make sure your glasses fit

Next, fit your glasses into the opening and make sure they fit into your DIY eyeglass case. If your glasses are too wide, you can adjust your seam by sewing along the very edge of the potholder instead.

You can also hand sew and do a blanket stitch on the edge if you like that look.

Decorating the DIY eyeglass case

6. Decorate

Now for the fun part: decorating the front! Well, first, you should decide which side you want to be the front. I like my loop to be at the top, and since I’m left-oriented, I went with the side where my loop was at the left.

You can hand sew the pieces or you can glue the pieces on. For my potholder, I went through some broken jewelry and buttons and started to play around with designs. I used an earring, some decorative buttons, and hot-glued them down.

Have pliers on hand so you can snip off any unwanted pieces of your decorations, like earring loops or the backs of buttons so they lay flat.

These are very cool, cheap to make, and you can decorate as many as you want to coordinate with your outfit or bags. Let me know if you plan on making one!
