How to Make Cute Faux Fur Bag Out of a Fuzzy Walmart Blanket

Faux fur and fuzzy bags are so fashionable! Perfect for winter, here’s a DIY faux fur purse or DIY tote bag made of fuzzy, furry fabric.
You could use a blanket and lining fabric you’ve already got at home with my tote bag sewing pattern and not even have to leave the house to buy fabric!
Here’s how to make a faux fur bag you can sew even if you’re a total novice at sewing. Let me show you how to make a tote bag with lining in about an hour!
Tools and materials:
- Furry fabric
- Lining
- Scissors - nice and sharp
- Paper
- Pen
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Sewing machine (use a heavy-duty needle)
- Long string that’s at least 45 inches
You can use a furry fuzzy blanket you have at home. If your blanket has a Sherpa lining, remove it before using it to make the furry tote.
Notice the direction the fur goes. You will want the smooth downward direction so brush the fabric down before cutting so you don’t get a choppy finish.
Don’t shake out furry fabrics - lint and fuzz will fly and make a mess! Keep a vacuum close by!
Leave a ½-inch seam allowance on all sides. Furry fabrics are bulky, thick, and a bit messy to work with. However, they are very forgiving if you’re just starting to sew.
1. Make the tote pattern
Measure rectangles that are 14 X 17 inches. Cut two pieces of the furry fabric and two pieces of the lining.
2. Make the strap pattern
The strap should measure 40 X 6 inches. You’re going to sew it together so the finished strap will be 40 X 3 inches.
Cut the strap in the way that you conserve the most fabric rather than the direction of the fur. (Note this diagram isn’t drawn to size.)
3. Cut the fabric
It is difficult to pin furry fabrics so make sure your scissors are extra sharp.
Leave a ½-inch seam allowance.
4. Sew the bag
Here’s a quick diagram of how you’ll sew the bag and the lining. Sew them separately, each with their right sides together. Keep the top open for both the bag and lining. Sew both side seams on both bags.
Leave a 6-inch open space in the lining. Sew the bottom seam of the furry bag completely.
Remember to check the direction of the fur before sewing the furry bag.
5. Sew the strap
The strap is quite long and the fabric is thick so it makes turning it inside out a bit of a task.
Here's a pro tip. Sew a long string on the wrong side of the furry fabric using a straight stitch horizontally to secure it in place.
Then, move the string to the right side and tuck it into the center. Fold the furry fabric around it. Pin the strap in place and sew it lengthwise, keeping the short ends unsewn.
Once it’s sewn, pull on the string to turn the furry tube inside out.
This may take some time and your shirt may get quite fuzzy but it will turn out! Snip off the string you used as a loop turner.
6. Attach the strap to the bag
Lay the straps' raw unsewn edge at the left side seam so their right sides are together. Sew it straight across.
This will be tough to do as your basically sewing through several layers of fluffy fabric. You may find it easier to reverse to sew if you’re having a hard time.
Once one side is sewn, keep the strap flat and go around to the right side of the bag. Use the same technique with the open edge of the strap at the top of the seam on the right. Sew with a straight stitch.
The strap should go around at the bottom.
7. Attach the lining to the bag
Insert the furry bag into the lining so their right sides are together. Keep the lining inside out. Line up the seams so they are together.
When you sew the lining to the bag, go in at least ⅛ of an inch so the strap attachment seams aren’t visible.
Be aware that when sewing fabrics of different weights, the thinner fabric may pucker.
If this is your first sewing adventure, don’t worry about it. These imperfections will be on the inside. Furry fabrics are much more forgiving.
Once the lining is attached, use the 6 inch space at the bottom to turn the bag right side out. Pull the lining out to sew up the space.

I love how honest you are about the job you did on this tote bag. I don't rip seams if it doesn't matter that much either. Save perfection for projects that show every stitch and that really matter to you. The fun stuff isn't fun if you obsess over the details. Love it!!!
love it!
