In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to cut curly hair bangs.

I cut my bangs when they start to get past my eyebrows and into my eyes because I like to show as much of my face as possible.

Tools and materials:

  • Scissors
  • Comb
Finding bangs

1. Find your bangs

If you’ve cut your bangs already, you only have to find the separation.

If it’s your first time, find the triangle shape where the top point is at the crown of your head.

The triangle will fall on your forehead and cover your eyes.

Sectioning

2. Section

Section out a single layer and clip the rest back.

3. Cut conservatively at first

Comb through the section of hair to stretch the length before cutting.

For the first section, be very conservative on how much length you cut since you can’t be sure how much shrinkage there’ll be.

Even if you’ve done this a few times, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Scrunching hair

4. Scrunch

Scrunch after each cut so the curl forms and you can see better what your hair will look like.

This way you can be more confident and cut shorter.

5. Continue cutting the first layer

Cut straight above your eyes.

Cutting hair

Cut in an angle on the side of your eyes. This is my preference, but if you have a straight bang, you can skip this.

Unclipping hair

6. Cut the second layer

Unclip the second section of hair. This section is easier than the first.

Find the first layer and match the length.

It’s important to keep your head parallel to the floor if you want to have a straight line.

Although we’re cutting curly hair, it's very forgiving even if your line is not perfectly straight.

7. Cut the third layer

You don’t want to have too thick of a bang, so comb this layer to the sides instead of fanning it across the front.

Cutting hair

Match the length only at the sides. It will be part of the overall length of your hair and will give you more volume.

8. Trim the rest of your hair

Trim the rest of your hair a bit to match with the bang and give it a little more volume. Just dust off a few ends of the curls.

Testing out new bangs

9. Test out your new bangs

Shake everything out while checking the overall shape. See if you like it or if you need to cut more.

Also, try putting it up into a ponytail to see if you like how your bangs fall when your hair is up.

I’m happy with the overall shape and how open my face looks.

Before we see the final look, here’s a huge tip I have for those of you cutting your bangs for the very first time. Rather than cutting your hair over one night or one day, try making it a whole week process.

For example, on day one, you cut your bangs to nose level and rock that style for a few days. Test it out in different looks and with your usual products to see how the hair reacts to that length.

How much shrinkage do you have? Can you take more hair from the top to make a fuller bang? After a few days, cut at eye level and then see how it goes.

Once you’re comfortable cutting, adjust the length and thickness according to what you like and what works with your facial features and hair type.

I like your advice about taking a week to find the perfect bang. This gives a week to try out different lengths and looks before committing to the final cut. You can always take a little bit off but, it takes forever to re-grow the "Oops!" 😱 We all probably have done it at least once. 😂
