In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make eyelashes look longer without fake lashes. Eyelash extensions and false strip eyelashes can be expensive, but there are other ways to make your eyelashes look longer and get better results from your mascara.

The best thing to have in your toolbox to make your eyelashes look longer and fuller naturally is an eyelash curler. And you might be surprised to know that the way you used to use an eyelash curler in your teens, may not be the optimal way of using it!

Tools and materials:

  • Eyelash curler
  • Eyelash primer
  • Mascara
  • Eyelash comb
Curling eyelashes with an eyelash curler

1. Curl your eyelashes with an eyelash curler

The traditional way of using an eyelash curler has been to clamp down at the base of your lashes really hard and hold it there for a while. The problem with that is it results in a very sharp bend of your eyelashes that will simply fall throughout the day.

Instead, follow this method for using an eyelash curler. Curl your eyelashes in three places:

  • First, squeeze the curler at the base of your eyelashes for 5 or 6 seconds.
  • Let go, and then squeeze it again at the middle of your lashes.
  • And then a third time on the tips of your lashes.

This method will give a nice curl to your lashes that will have good lasting power.

Tip: always clean off your eyelash curler with a tissue between uses and do not use the curler on your eyelashes after applying mascara.

Applying eyelash primer to lashes

2. Apply eyelash primer

Apply mascara primer as you would mascara. The nice thing about eyelash primer is that it is usually white, so you can easily see where you have applied it. You can do just your top lashes or both top and bottom lashes if you like.

Let it dry for a few seconds, but don’t let it get completely dry. Using the eyelash primer will bring so much more out of your mascara.

3. Add mascara

Apply 2 or 3 coats of mascara, depending on how much drama you want. When applying the mascara, wiggle the brush in small z-shaped motions to help work the mascara into your eyelashes.

If, while applying the mascara, you get some clumps on your eyelashes, loosen them up with a steel-toothed eyelash comb. Just be extremely careful using it so close to your eyes!

Always used an eye lash curler but now being a senior I’m having a hard time with the eye lashes curling with the curler. I’ve tried heating the eye lash curler but still not getting a curl. I do use primer and mascara but would love the curl. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Joanne, I heat my eyelashes & eyelash curler with a blow dryer (one eye at a time).
