For centuries the Yao ethnic women from the village of Huangluo in China have used rice water to enhance their face, body, and hair.

With their average hair length of about six feet, these women made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's longest hair village.

Plus, these women do not have gray hair till their late 80s. The Yao women believe that the fermented rice water is what helps to keep their hair healthy.

The recipe was making its rounds on Tiktok, so I tried it to help maintain my hair quality. I can't wait to share with you how to make fermented rice water for hair.

Tools and materials:

  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Rice
  • Strainer
  • Bottle
  • Spray bottle
  • Microfiber towel
  • Comb
Preparing rice

1. Prepare the rice

Measure one tablespoon of regular long-grain rice and rinse it to remove all of the dirt and impurities from it.

Then add one cup of water to the rice and leave it to soak for about thirty minutes.

While you’re leaving it to soak, gently swirl the rice around with a spoon to release all the nutrients into the water.

Straining liquid

2. Strain liquid

Once the rice has finished soaking, strain the water into a bottle.

3. Leave to ferment

Leave the liquid at room temperature for 24 hours until it ferments.

Fermentation time can vary depending on the temperature where you live.

During the summer, I leave it for 24 hours, but during the winter, it takes longer.

When the water is finished fermenting, it will be a bit smelly.

Transferring fermented rice water

4. Transfer to spray bottle

The mixture is double the amount I need for my hair, so I’m going to transfer just half of it to a spray bottle.

The other half I will store in the refrigerator to use for next time. The rice mixture is extremely potent, so add another half cup of water to dilute it.

Applying to hair

5. Apply to hair

After washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner, spritz the fermented rice water into your scalp as well as on your hair.

Make sure to cover all areas and then gently massage it in. Leave it in for about twenty minutes before rinsing it out.

If you prefer, you can also soak your hair in a basin or a bowl of fermented rice water for about ten to fifteen minutes and then rinse your hair with plain water.

Drying hair

6. Dry hair

Once I've rinsed my hair, I do not use any dryer or heat on my hair, I tie it with a microfiber towel.

Combing hair

7. Comb hair

When your hair is dry, gently comb through all the knots to smooth out your hair.

At this stage, you can also apply a heat protectant spray if you’re going to be using heat on your hair.

Long healthy hair

You can use the fermented rice water once or twice a week, depending on your hair's condition and how it responds to the treatment.
