How to Make a Paper Heart Necklace: Easy DIY Gift for Valentine's Day

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, hearts might be on your mind. If so, check out this tutorial to learn how to make a paper heart necklace. This DIY heart necklace could also be repurposed as a charm or other cute jewelry items. Let's get started!
Tools and materials:
- Paper
- Pencil
- Old cereal box or other cardboard
- Scissors
- Red or pink nail polish
- Permanent black marker
- Jewelry jump rings and chains
1. Make a heart template
Fold a small piece of paper in half and draw half a heart with the fold in the middle of the heart. Then, cut out the heart shape and unfold it, to make a perfectly symmetrical heart.
Make the heart the size you want your pendant to be.
2. Trace the heart on cardboard
Next, take apart a cereal box, and trace the heart onto the cereal box cardboard as many times as pendants you’d like to make. Note that you will need at least three hearts for each pendant you make.
3. Cut and glue the hearts
When you are done tracing all your hearts, cut them out of the cardboard. Glue three hearts together to make one thick heart.
Make sure all the edges are even and trim any excess cardboard if necessary.
4. Punch a hole in the center
Use something with a sharp point to punch a small hole in the top center of the heart, going through all three layers.
5. Cover the heart pendant in nail polish
Use pink or red nail polish to paint both sides of your heart. Let the nail polish completely dry on one side before painting the other side.
6. Draw the heartbeat
Once the nail polish is dry on both sides, use a black permanent marker to draw a heartbeat on one side of the heart.
7. Attach a jump ring and chain
Attach a jump ring to the heart using pliers. Then put a chain through the jump ring and add a clasp if your chain doesn’t already have one.

If you want to make this into a layered necklace, add a small, black-painted heart (smaller than the red one) to a second chain.
