Easy Macrame Necklace DIY

Macrame homeware and accessories continue to be popular this year from plant holders, to wall hangings and fashion accessories. I love making macrame crafts and have a few blog posts you can see here & here. Today I am showing you how to make this quick macrame necklace with only a few supplies.

You Will Need

  • 5mm macrame rope
  • A dried twig
  • Necklace chain
  • 2 x 8mm jump rings

How to Make

Find a nice straight twig roughly 5mm thick and make sure it is nice and dry, trim the twig to roughly 5 cms in length.

Cut two pieces of rope to 70 cms each and attach them to the twig with a  larks head knot. To make a larks head knot, fold the rope in half and loop the curve over the twig, bring back round the front and pass the loose ends through the hole created and pull to attach to the twig. This knot is how you start most macrame projects.

Tape the twig to your craft desk with washi tape, then add four square knots to form your necklace shape. If you need to learn how to make a square know you can  watch my video here, I show how to make a square knot at 1:50.

Use a comb or your fingers to brush out the ends of the rope for a frayed look, tidy up the ends by trimming to a neat length with scissors.

Add the jump rings to either side of the twig and take your necklace chain, pass it through the first jump ring, I then threaded the necklace through the back of the larks head knot then through the second jump ring. If you would prefer a longer necklace just use a longer chain, mine was 18inches.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on how to make a macrame necklace, it’s super easy & literally takes 10 minutes to make. If you don’t fancy wearing it as a necklace you could use it as a bookmark, gift-wrap topper or keyring.
