Tools and materials:
- Polymer clay
- Carving tools
- Razor blade
- Eyeshadow
1. Grab your clay
For this tutorial, we’re making a polymer clay feather with an ombre effect. So, pick out three shades that vary from dark to light. You can see the ones I chose in the picture above but there are a lot of colors available.
2. Shape your clay
Start by rolling pieces of your clay into this teardrop shape to get the feather look.
3. Blend
Push the 3 teardrops together and then flatten them with a roller to blend the three clays together. Keep folding and flattening until the colors unite seamlessly.
Stretch out the clay to avoid any air bubbles.
4. Sketch out the basic shape
Use a dotting tool to sketch out the basic shape of a feather.
5. Cut
Cut out the shape with a razor blade or any sharp tool.
6. Place a line of clay
Roll the excess clay into a long, thin line and place it on top of the cut clay to create the line between the feather.
Blend.
7. Create texture and shape the clay into a feather
Use a sharp object to create lines of texture in the clay.
I also used the dotting tool to create more texture and to flatten and shape the line down the middle so it blended smoothly.
Cut out bits of the clay to create natural separations and give it a more feathered look.
8. Use eyeshadow to add color and depth
I started by brushing the feather with gold powder.
Then, I used a purple eyeshadow to add some depth.
