I realized the denim fabric was perfect for a basic DIY jumpsuit, so I gathered my materials and started sewing. Follow along to learn about my process and see the adorable results.

Sew a DIY jumpsuit

Rip seams

Use a seam ripper to remove the waistband from the skirt, open the front and back seams, and remove the back pockets.

How to make a DIY jumpsuit

Match seams

Lay the two pieces of the skirt right sides together, with what used to be the side seams of the skirt matched up in the center.

How to sew a DIY jumpsuit

Measure and mark

Follow the instructions in the video from 1:02-4:06 for measuring and marking the skirt.

Basic DIY jumpsuit

Cut

Cut the fabric along the lines you just marked.

DIY jumpsuit tutorial

In the center V, cut curved edges.

Easy DIY jumpsuit

Zigzag stitch

Zigzag stitch all the raw edges to keep them from fraying.

Beginner DIY jumpsuit

Pin and sew

Pin and sew the front and back crotch seams.

Then pin and sew the end of the crotch line.

Fold, pin, and sew

Mark a line 6 centimeters (2½ inches) from the top of the overalls, and then fold the top edge down to that line and pin it in place. Then sew. Do the same for the back.

Pin and sew

Fold the side edges of the overalls down about 1 centimeter (½ an inch), all the way around the side openings, and sew them down.

Cut

Cut four strips of fabric, 40 centimeters (15¾ inches) long and 4 centimeters (1½ inches) wide.

Make straps

Sew the long edges of each strip closed, then turn the fabric right side out with a safety pin, so the seam is hidden inside. Finally, iron each strip so it lays flat.

Pin and sew

Pin the straps to the inside corners of the overalls, and sew them in place.

Attach pockets

To add some cute detail, you can reattach the pockets on the front of the overalls, making sure they are placed evenly before sewing them down.

I love how this turned out! This is a perfect outfit for an active summer day. I hope you like this DIY jumpsuit tutorial, and try it out for yourself.
