Hair masks can make a tremendous difference in the health, manageability, and shine of your hair but a lot of them are super expensive.
Today, I’m going to show you an overnight hair mask DIY using ingredients you’ll find in your very own kitchen. Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Banana
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Greek yogurt
- Honey
- Milk
- Avocado
Banana hair mask DIY
This banana and olive oil mask is specifically for very dry or damaged hair.
Bananas contain potassium, which strengthens the hair, and olive oil is rich in healthy fats and vitamin E, making the hair look shiny and reducing frizz.
1. Smash a banana
Smash half of a banana in a bowl.
2. Add olive oil
Drench the banana in olive oil.
3. Mix
Mix the olive oil and banana thoroughly until it’s joined together.
To use: Shampoo your hair first and then towel dry. Apply the mask and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse.
If you have really dry and damaged hair, you can do this up to twice a week.
Coconut oil hair mask
This hair mask is for shine.
Clinical data shows coconut oil helps to get rid of some types of fungal infections, therefore healing or preventing dandruff on the scalp.
It’s also a natural saturated fat and the high-fat content can help calm scalp irritation, flaking, and itching. The fat can also help seal in hair moisture as it absorbs into hair strands better than other kinds of oils.
This may help prevent hair breakage and split ends. If you use coconut oil regularly, you can also trim your hair less as your ends won’t split as much.
To use: There are a few ways to use coconut oil in your hair. One easy way to use it is to melt it in the microwave and then rub it from the scalp to the ends.
Wrap your hair in a towel for 15-30 minutes and then shampoo it out.
This is a great pre-shampoo treatment. I don’t recommend using it post-shampoo as it can make your hair feel weighed down or greasy, especially if you have fine hair.
Another great way to use it is by adding lots of other healthy, kitchen ingredients such as avocado, olive oil, or argan oil.
I like using olive oil because its richness of healthy fats and vitamins works really well with coconut oil.
Yogurt hair mask
A yogurt, coconut oil, and honey hair mask is particularly good for people with dry, damaged hair who want added shine.
Greek yogurt has a high protein content and creamy consistency that provides serious conditioning for dry, damaged hair. It’s great at controlling frizz and even adding shine.
1. Add greek yogurt to a bowl
Add 2 tablespoons of greek yogurt.
2. Add coconut oil
Add ¼ teaspoon of coconut oil.
3. Add honey
Add 1 tablespoon of honey.
4. Mix well
Mix until you have a smooth consistency.
To use: Apply the mask to the strands and leave it on for 15-20 minutes before mixing.
You don’t have to follow the specific measurements in this video, so get creative and incorporate them in the way that works best for you and your hair type.
Milk and honey mask
If you have fine hair and you’re afraid of oil, here’s a fine hair natural hair mask you’re going to love.
Honey contains keratin which strengthens the hair and prevents damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which can calm irritation on the scalp.
Milk contains protein, amino acids, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc which softens the hair and supports the hair structure.
1. Add milk to a bowl
If you have thick hair, you can use heavy milk products like cream.
If you have fine hair, you can use skim milk and you’ll get the same great properties while customizing it to your hair needs and density.
2. Add honey to the bowl
Mix them together after adding.
To use: Shampoo your hair first and then apply it from scalp to ends. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse.
DIY avocado hair mask
This is a really great hair mask for mending split ends.
Avocados have proteins and vitamins which nourish and soften the hair and olive oil makes the hair look shiny and reduces frizz.
1. Add avocado to a bowl
Cut out a small chunk of avocado from the whole.
2. Add olive oil
Drench the avocado in olive oil.
3. Mix
Mix until well-incorporated.
To use: Apply to your ends only and leave it on for half an hour for maximum benefits. Rinse or wash off.
