Make a Pair of Wrap Pants With This Easy Culottes Sewing Pattern
Culottes are not quirky fashion - they are literally the coolest fashion item ever. Combining the best of shorts, pants, and skirt, culottes mesh all three to be one of the most comfortable items you’ll ever own.
If you wanted to learn how to make culottes, my DIY culottes sewing pattern will show exactly how to do it. Let me show you how to make culottes pants with a soft skirt on top perfect to wear anywhere.
Tools and materials:
- 2-3 yards of fabric with a 50-inch width
- Pins
- Scissors
- Tailor’s chalk
- Measuring tape
- Sewing machine
- Serger
- ½-inch elastic
1. Make the culottes sewing pattern
Fold the fabric into quarters. With the open end towards you, measure 30 inches (75 cm) across the bottom and 22 inches (56 cm) down from the top.
Pin the fabric together so it doesn’t move when you cut it.
At the top corner where all the folds meet, measure down 3 inches (8 cm).
Measure 11 inches (28 cm) across on the fold.
Square out this measurement with the tailor’s chalk. Draw a curve in the square.
Diagonally across from the square at the open end, draw a curve from one end to the other. Cut these pieces out.
Cut along both folds, one at a time. Remove all the pins.
You’ll have two U-shaped panels.
2. Sew the center
Place the panels right sides together. Pin around the U-shaped opening. Sew in place.
Lift up the panels to have the sewn seam be the center seam. Flip it so the flat open top faces you.
Measure from the center seam 10 inches (25 cm) out from either side.
Mark 10 inches on the front and back panels for a total of 4 marks.
Fold in the top 10-inch marking into the inner 10-inch marking. Pin in place.
Pull up the bottom layer of the same side at the 10-inch mark, folding it over towards the center seam. Pin in place.
Repeat for the other side. Stitch into place.
3. Sew the sides
Serge all the raw edges. Fold in the serged edges.
Stitch to create a hem along the sides and the bottom.
4. Make the waistband
Cut a piece of fabric 39 inches long by 4.7 inches wide (100 X 12 cm).
Fold the fabric right sides together. Sew the short sides together to create a loop.
Mark the waistband using ½-inch elastic as your guide.
Sew a straight stitch on the marking down the length of the waistband to create a casing in the waistband.
Match the waistband seam to the center back seam. Pin the waistband along the waist, with the open end of the waistband, meeting the raw edge of the waist. Stitch across, leaving a 2-inch gap unsewn.
Cut a 25-inch (64 cm) piece of elastic. Attach a safety pin to the elastic. Tunnel the elastic through the unsewn gap inside the casing.
Once the elastic is through, join the two ends and stitch securely.
Tuck the elastic back inside, readjust the waistband and stitch the gap closed.
