In this sewing tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make harem pants.

Love them or hate them, harem pants are a classic that keeps coming into fashion time and time again. They have a big baggy crotch, and their loose fit makes them comfy to wear.

The measurements used in this post are for a size 38 to 46.

Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Outer fabric
  • Pocket fabric
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Pins
  • Elastic
  • Pen
Measuring fabric

1. Measure the fabric

Take a large piece of fabric, fold it in half and cut it to measure 38x104 cm (15x41 inches).

Cutting the fabric

2. Mark and cut

On the length side, mark 23cm (9 inches) down from the open side.

Then, in the opposite corner, mark 44cm (17 inches) across. Draw a line connecting those two points and cut along that line.

Sewing pieces together

3. Sew together the triangle pieces

Take the triangle that you just cut out and pin along the small side to join the two pieces together.

Measurements

The above picture shows the measurements of the current piece of material you have.

4. Cut another piece of fabric

Cut another piece of fabric that measures 84x20cm (33x8 inches). Fold the piece in half widthways and then in half again.

Drawing the pockets

5. Draw the pockets

Draw a shape around your hand as shown and then cut it out.

These will be your pocket pieces. Proceed to cut along the folded side so that you’re left with four pieces of fabric (two lots of two).

Sewing pockets to harem pants

6. Sew the pockets to the pants

Open up the pants and mark 15cm (6 inches) down from either top side.

Place the pockets below this mark as shown. Sew the pockets down. Then flip the pockets over and sew on the other side.

Attaching fabric

7. Attach the other piece of fabric

Take the piece of triangle fabric from earlier, place the middle of it at the crotch area and pin each long side down the sides of the pants.

Proceed to sew where you have placed the pins.

8. Attach the second pants piece

Take the second layer of the pants, place it on top of the first pair and repeat the previous step.

Pin the middle of the triangle piece at the crotch area, pin each long side down the sides of the pants and sew down.

Attaching the pockets

9. Attach the pockets

Next, pin around the outside of the pockets and sew down and also pin and sew the outer legs.

Sewing elastic

10. Cut and sew the elastic

Cut some elastic to measure 69cm (27 inches) and sew the ends together.

Marking the elastic

11. Mark the elastic

Fold the elastic in half and then half again and mark it at four equal points around the elastic.

Pinning the elastic to the harem pants

12. Pin the elastic to the pants

Pin the center point of the top of the pants, line the center back up with one of the marks on the elastic and pin them together.

Line the center front up with one of the other marks as well as the two sides and pin them together.

Sewing the elastic

Step 13. Sew the elastic

Proceed to sew the elastic to the pants.

When done, fold the elastic over so it’s covered with the fabric, and then sew it down to conceal the elastic.

Here are the finished harem pants! I love how baggy the crotch area is, these are perfect for kicking back and relaxing. They would make great workout pants too, as you have a lot of space to move around. I love this design, and I hope you do too.
