How to create a DIY pattern for the coat

1. Make the coat pattern

I used one of my bodice patterns for this step and simply elongated the bottom to form Shania Twain's long hooded coat.

Tip: If you do not have a bodice pattern, you can use a regular bodice as a guide.

Cutting a pattern for the leopard-print coat

2. Cut the leopard-print fabric

Now, cut the pattern but make it bigger than usual since her coat is oversized.

Cutting out fabric pieces for the coat

Take the first part you cut and use it as a guide for the second bodice piece. Also, be sure to cut the long back piece; this is fairly simple to do, just follow the armholes and cut all the way straight down.

3. Assemble the coat

Pin the shoulder seams of the front piece to the back piece and repeat on the other side. Make sure the fabric is right sides facing. Then, sew to secure.

Making the sleeves for the coat

4. Make the sleeves and hood

Cut out the pattern of the sleeves. If you don’t have a pattern as I do, You can simply place a long sleeve from a top that you have on the fold of your fabric and cut the outer edge. Remember to add some seam allowance.

Cutting around the hood

Next, fold your fabric and place a hoodie on top. Cut around the hoodie with some seam allowance.

Sewing the coat

Now, stitch the two pieces right sides together, along the curved edge.

Now, to finish the coat, attach the sleeves to the armhole area of the coat. Sew the side seams of both the sleeves and the body together, and attach the hood, too. Also, don’t forget to hem the raw edges for a cleaner look!

5. Make the bralette

I decided to make the bralette from my scrap fabric and not the top that I purchased. To make the pattern, measure your bust size. Then, measure and cut a simple bandeau shape. Add seam allowance, too.

This is what it should look like.

Attaching bra clasps to the bandeau top

Hem the edges. Now, it’s time to attach the bra clasps. Cut the clasps to size, as shown, and attach accordingly. On the other end, hand-stitch the opposite clasps.

Making straps for the bandeau

6. Make the straps

Measure the length of your shoulders and cut two straps accordingly. Then, fold each end inward.

Once that’s done, fold the strap one more time, pin it, and stitch down the center to secure.

Now, attach the straps to the bralette.

Taking in the leopard-print pants

7. Take in the pants

The pants I got from the thrift store were a little too big on me. So, I decided to take it in. If you want to see how I do this, skip to 8:30 minutes of my Shania Twain Halloween costume video to learn more.
