Follow this tutorial to get my recipe for a 100% organic body lotion.

This DIY body lotion is made with shea butter and coconut oil, so it’s a great body lotion for dry skin!

When you have complete knowledge of what’s in your body lotion, you’ll truly enjoy using it with confidence.

Tools and materials:

  • Organic, unrefined shea butter
  • Vitamin E oil
  • Virgin, organic coconut oil
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Vegetable glycerin
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Oil dropper
  • Blender
  • Small containers with lids (at least 20 ounces)
Ingredients

1. Body lotion recipe

Let’s begin with the body lotion recipe:

  • 1 cup shea butter
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable glycerin
  • 2 tablespoons of Vitamin E oil
  • 2 ounces of olive oil
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons of essential oil

Tip: For body lotion, you can use any oil from your kitchen.

But, if you are planning to use this lotion on your face, you would be better off with jojoba oil, or avocado oil.

Blending ingredients

2. Blend ingredients

Put the first five ingredients into a blender, and blend until smooth. The essential oil will be added later.

Tip: You are dealing with a lot of different oils, and it is going to get messy.

Make this body lotion in your kitchen, and have paper towels, dish soap and hot water ready to keep things as clean as possible.

Adding essential oil

3. Add essential oil

Once the main ingredients are well blended, add 3 milliliters (1 teaspoon) of essential oil using a dropper.

Blend, and check if you are happy with the amount of essential oil.

If you want more, add it a bit at a time, up to a total of another teaspoon.

4. Store your lotion

Pour your finished body lotion into your container and let it sit until it’s lotion consistency.

Plastic container

Tip: If you are using a plastic container to store your body lotion, check for “PET” on the container label. That means that the plastic will not interact and degrade with your essential oils.

Alternatively, you can use a small glass jar.

5. Using your body lotion

Although you are using all safe, natural, organic ingredients to make this body lotion, and you know exactly what is in it, there are some use-cases to be aware of.

Pregnant women may want to leave out the essential oil, or research which essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy.

Generally, body lotions should not be used on young babies.

Try a dab of lotion on your skin, to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients, and never apply pure essential oil directly to your skin.

I call the amazing DIY body lotion “body butter,” because of its thick, buttery consistency.

You only need to use a very little bit for each application because a little goes a long way. But you can use it every day to protect and moisturize your skin all day long.
