I wanted my own pair of women's biker shorts for a long time! I took matters into my own hands and decided to sew a pair of easy biker shorts from scratch! It's simple and fun! I love the sporty look, and I absolutely enjoy how comfy they are. You don't need many materials for this tutorial either; it's basic and straight to the point. Let's start sewing!

Tools and materials:

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • Chalk
  • Shorts
How to make biker shorts

Make the pattern

I chose stretchy material, so I didn't need a seam allowance. I folded my fabric four times, took one of my favorite pants, and traced it along the sides. Remember to trace the crotch part really well. Take your time with it. There's no need to rush!

Cut out the pattern

Again, don't rush with this step. You don't want to cut out of place and mess it up. Take a sharp pair of scissors and cut the fabric along the traced lines.

How to sew biker shorts

Cut along fold

Cut the fold so that you are left with 2 pieces.

Here are my leg pieces. I already folded them, and you can clearly see the cute leg cut.

Sew the biker shorts

Place both pieces right sides facing, and sew the center back and center front. If your machine has a zigzag stitch, then that is the preferred way to sew. If you don't have this setting, simply use a straight stitch.

Be sure to trim the excess threads once you've sewn the pieces together.

Sew inner thigh seams

Now it's time to sew the inner thigh seams. Flip your material so that the seam is now in the middle. Sew the inner thigh seams. Sew one straight seam from one end of the inner leg to the other, ensuring that the seams won't come loose.

Hem the leg openings

Optional- hem the leg openings

I didn't hem the leg openings, but if you want, go ahead and do so. Simply fold the fabric inwards and sew.

Attach the waistband

Add a waistband

I added a waistband so that the shorts sit at a high-waisted position. I simply measured the elastic around my waist, cut it, and encased it through a channel that I sewed on the waistline.
