Learn How to Make a Tulle Skirt With Ribbon Hem

In this DIY, I’m going to show you how to make a super gorgeous tulle skirt with ribbon detail. It’s got a wrap tie that you can tie as a bow, and it is very easy to make. The sheer element is very different to your average skirt and it will definitely elevate any outfit and make you look classy.
Tools and materials:
- Tulle
- Ribbon
- Fabric marker
- Fabric clips
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Measure and cut the skirt
You’re first going to make a circle skirt. Ensure that your tulle is folded in half twice, clip the edges to keep it in place. Calculate the radius of your waist measurement and the length of your skirt and draw this on the material from the folded corners. Proceed to cut the shape out.
Tip:
You can find out how to calculate your radius measurement on my website.
Open it up
Open up your circle skirt donut and cut a seam down one side.
Add the ribbon at the bottom
You’re now going to hem the skirt with the ribbon, so starting at one end, place the ribbon with the right side facing up and ensure that it overlaps the edge of the tulle slightly. Proceed to pin it down and repeat this along the entire hem of the skirt.
Sew the bottom edge
Sew along the top edge of the ribbon. Don’t forget to remove the pins as you sew and to backstitch at the beginning and the end.
Add the ribbon at the top
Ensure that the hem ribbon is right side facing up, then move along to the top waist section and place a new piece of ribbon with the wrong side facing up. Leave a tail of about 30 inches of the ribbon before you start pinning. Pin all the way along and when you’re done, leave another tail of about 30 inches of the ribbon and cut.
Sew the top edge
Then sew along the top edge. After sewing the top edge, flip the waistband ribbon so that the right side is facing up and sew the bottom to secure it in place. Cut the edges at a slant and run them very quickly through a flame, the heat will melt the edges of the ribbon which will prevent them from fraying.
Worn on top of a plain black skirt, this tulle skirt will elevate your outfit and give you a very sophisticated look - great for special occasions. As well as wearing this as a skirt, you can also criss-cross it around your neck and cinch it in with a skinny belt to give it a completely different look. Which do you prefer?
