Tools and materials:
- Fabric
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Serger/overlocker
Finish the pocket sections
Let’s begin with the four pocket sections. First, go ahead and finish the edges of each section with an overlocker or serger. Leave the straight edges raw for now.
Sew the back pieces together
Next, pin the back pieces of the skirt together and the center seam. Then take it over to your sewing machine and stitch along the center seam.
Press the center seams open and then use your overlocker or serger to finish the raw edges of the back piece.
Sew on the pocket sections
Once the back piece is ready, place it right side up. Then pin on one pocket section to each side, right sides together. Then attach the other two pocket sections to the front skirt piece.
Go ahead and stitch on the pocket sections. Then finish the front and raw edges of the front and back pieces with your overlocker or serger. Try and trim off as little fabric as possible.
Sew the front and back pieces
Next, pin and stitch the front and back pieces together along the side seams including the pockets. Begin at the top, and then pivot across the pocket sections. Then move down the rest of the side. Make sure that you stitch about 2 inches along the side seam at the bottom of the pocket.
Make a casing
Next, Sew the two short edges together for the casing. Then fold the casing over and press it, right sides out.
Stitch the lower, open edges of the casing together leaving a 3-inch gap in the casing. The casing is longer than the waist of the skirt. This step is so that the casing can achieve a gathered look.
Gather the casing
Next, add a second stitch beside the first one on the casing to make the gathers. Make sure to still leave the gap open. Then, after sewing, pull the thread to gather the casing so that it matches the waist of the skirt.
Create a waistband
Flip the casing over so that the folded edge is facing down. Then pin on the casing, to the right side of the skirt section, making sure that the opening lines up with the side seam.
Stitch the casing onto the skirt edge. Begin and end on each side of the opening.
Cut the elastic to size and attach a safety pin to one end. Then thread the elastic through the opening all the way around the waist.
Overlap the ends of the elastic and stitch. Then close the opening. Make sure to adjust the gatherings as you stitch the opening closed. Lastly, finish the raw edges of the waistband seam with an overlocker or serger.
Hem the skirt
Try on your skirt to check the length. Then finish the edges with your overlocker or serger. Press the hem in position. I recommend making the hem ¾ of an inch.
Finish the skirt by stitching down the hem.
