I thrift flipped a boring old and stretched short sleeved V neck sweater into a cute fitted DIY knit sweater vest in under an hour.

This is a very beginner-friendly project. You just need to take a few measurements before you start and the most basic sewing machine will handle this.

Tools and materials:

  • Short sleeved V neck sweater
  • Measuring tape
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
Taking measurements

1. Take your measurements

Take your bust and waist measurements and divide each by 4.

Measure your shoulder seam from the outer edge of the V neck, your armhole depth and the length of your sweater vest above the band. That's it!

Marking sweater

2. Mark up the sweater

Lay your sweater out flat with all the seams aligned. Fold it in half lengthways and match the side and shoulder seams and the lower edge.

Measure the length from the outer edge of the neckline and mark with tailor's chalk.

Mark your quarter bust measurement from the center fold just under the armhole and your quarter waist figure from the center along the line you made for the length.

Marking sweater

Join your bust and waist marks with a line.

Mark your shoulder seam from the outer V neck and measure your armhole depth from that point. Curve the armhole line towards the side edge.

Cutting sweater

3. Cut the sweater

Cut out the new shape from your sweater and don't discard the scraps yet.

We can't leave the edges unfinished, so cut off both sleeve bands, leaving a half inch above the band for the seam allowance.

Cutting sweater

Measure the lower band against the bottom edge and cut off the excess width. Cut the band off, plus a half inch for the seam allowance.

Assembling sweater vest

4. Assemble the sweater vest

Join the side seams with right sides together, taking a half inch seam allowance.

Assembling sweater vest

Pin the lower band and arm bands to the top with right sides together, stretching them to fit where necessary, and sew in place.

Press all the seams carefully.

Wear your new DIY sweater vest on its own or over a long-sleeved shirt or t-shirt. It looks great with a skirt or pants too, so it's a versatile addition to your closet.
