Sometimes you just don’t want to put on a jacket and you wish you had something more comfortable but just as warm. Enter, the poncho. The simple yet trendy garment has been in use for decades as a practical alternative to jackets and coats.

But this stunning DIY poncho not just fun to wear, it’s also fun to sew because it isn’t complex and takes about half an hour or so.

Prepare the fabric

You’ll need two pieces of fabric this time, one for the body and the other for the cowl. Cut one rectangle measuring 60 x 52 inches and another one measuring 24 x 22 inches.

Fold the large piece in half so that the longer edges align and the right side stays on the inside. Fold it again, but this time have the short edges align.

Measure out four inches along the top edge away from the corner at the fold and mark it. Measure two inches away from the same corner but along the side edge and mark it.

Cut a curved line connecting the two marks through all layers to remove the corner.

Fold the smaller fabric piece in half so that the short edges meet and the right side is in. Stitch the long raw edges together using a half-inch seam allowance.

Press the seam open and turn the fabric inside-out. Mark the quarters on one short edge.

Mark the quarters of the curved edge on the large fabric piece. Unfold it once and push the small piece between the layers at the curved edge. Make sure to align the marks of the two fabrics with each other.

Sew around the curved edge with a half-inch seam allowance and join the cowl with the poncho body, then turn the poncho inside-out.

If you want to decorate the poncho a bit, stitch a piece of leather to the cowl.

With this lovely poncho, you can enjoy walks on cold days without feeling a dash of that low temperature. It can also substitute a blanket while you sit on the porch, or even on your living room couch. Have fun wearing your new comfortable poncho!
