In this tutorial, I’m going to be showing you how to make your own high-waisted bikini bottoms using this Whitney pattern. The great thing about reversible clothing like this is that it’s like having two items of clothing instead of one, and what’s not to like about that?

We’ll be working with two different types of nylon spandex fabric to make this DIY high-waisted bikini. I went for a solid bright blue color for one and a tropical print for the other.

Tools and materials:

  • Whitney bottoms pattern
  • Two different types of nylon spandex fabric
  • Rubber elastic
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutter
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine

1. Cut the pieces

Cut two of the front and two of the back pieces in each of your fabrics. Be sure to leave a quarter of an inch seam allowance.

Leaving an opening to turn the fabric

2. Sew along the gusset

Match your front and back pieces of both fabrics by placing them one on top of the other with the right sides facing each other. Then, sew along the gusset on each, leaving a 1-inch hole in one of them. This will be used to turn the fabric later.

3. Pin the pieces together

Match both pieces by placing them one on top of the other, right sides together, and pin them in place. Proceed to sew along the leg holes.

4. Add elastic

Add elastic onto the leg holes - simply sew it right on top of where you just sewed.

Turning the fabric right sides out

5. Sew the hips

Turn the bikini bottoms inside out so that they are back to the right side. Line up the hips and match the right sides together. Sew the hips together. When done, turn the suit back to the right side again and finish the other side of the hips.

6. Sew the waist

Next, sew the waist. Locate the 1-inch hole that you left in one of the fabrics. Reach through and grab the two layers of fabric making up the front waist. Pull the waist through, trying to keep the fabric lined up correctly. Straighten the suit out. Match up the two outer layers and proceed to sew the two layers together.

7. Add elastic to the waist

The last step is to add elastic to the waist, over where you just sewed. Then turn the suit back to the right side, using the 1-inch hole. Finally, using an invisible stitch, finish off the hole.

Here is the finished DIY high-waisted bikini, and as you can see, I also designed a matching bikini top. The bikini bottoms feel super comfortable, and I love the tropical print that I chose; it is perfect for hot sunny days lounging by the pool.

It makes me so happy when I’ve made something by hand instead of buying it in the store; it gives me a real sense of achievement. I hope that you try this DIY high-waisted bikini bottom sewing pattern yourself!

Gosh. Well done. It looks stunning. I would be a bit frightened to try my own.
