How to Make Your Own High-Waisted Bikini Bottoms With a Seamless Waist

In this tutorial, I'll show how to make your own high-waisted bikini bottoms. If you’re looking for how to make your own high-waisted bikini bottoms that are reversible, fast, and beautiful, this is the guide for you!
The Savannah high-waisted bikini bottom sewing pattern features a thick waistband, similar to leggings. This makes these DIY high-waisted bikini bottoms perfect for those who want a little extra belly room or coverage!
Since it doesn’t have a seam right at the top of the waist, it’s perfect if you’re pregnant and need a high-waisted bikini bottom. The pattern has 3 coverage options for the back: thong for adventurous types, cheeky for flirtatious types, and full coverage for sporty types!
Let me show you how to sew high-waisted bikini bottoms right now...
Tools and materials:
- High-waisted bikini bottom sewing pattern
- ½ yard swimwear fabric: outer layer and lining
- ¼-inch swimwear elastic
- Polyester thread
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Clips
- Sewing machine
1. Make the pattern
Print and cut the pieces of the pattern.
Place the pattern on the fabric.
Cut 2 of the front and 2 of the back, as well as 2 pieces of the waistband.
If you want to make this reversible, use another swimwear fabric instead of lining fabric.
2. Start sewing
Match the front with the front and the back with the back pieces right sides together. Sew just along the leg holes. Attach the ¼-inch elastic along the legs.
If you have a serger, you can do both at the same time. If you don’t, sew first, and then go back and attach the elastic.
Turn the back piece right side facing out. Insert the back piece into the front piece.
Align the gusset. Clip in place.
Align the sides so they’re both right sides together. Sew the gusset and the sides.
You may want to topstitch the waist so that it’s closed. This way there’s less loose fabric at the top.
3. Attach the waistband
Match the waistband pieces, right sides together. Sew on the inside corners using a straight stitch. Keep the wrong side facing out.
Insert the sewn bottom with the right sides facing out inside the waistband loop.
Clip the top of the bikini bottom to the raw edge of the waistband loop. First, sew with a straight stitch to serve as a basting stitch.
There’s just one raw edge left!
This is where it gets a bit tricky! The result is definitely worth it though! You’ll use the sandwich method.
Have the piece wrong side facing. The goal is to get the raw edge to meet the sewn edge of the waistband. You’ll need to scrunch down the raw edge and tuck in the bottom for this to happen.
If you have trouble, watch the video from 2:15 to 2:35 in slow motion.
Once the edges are aligned, clip in place. Sew along the clipped edge, leaving a 1-2 inch space to turn the bottom inside out. You don’t need to attach any elastic.
4. Finish up the bottom
Using the hole you left, turn the bottom right side out. Finish the hole with an invisible stitch or topstitch.
