Today, I’m going to be showing you a few different ideas for ways to add some cute details to a boring, white t-shirt. In this DIY t-shirt tutorial, there are five fun and easy projects that will take your plain tees from drab to fab.



Tools and materials:

  • White t-shirts
  • Contrasting fabric
  • Pom-pom trim
  • Racing stripe trim
  • Iron-on motif
  • Iron
  • Dishtowel
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Seam ripper
  • Sewing machine


Pom-pom hem crop top

For this DIY, you will need a cropped t-shirt, and a roll of pom-pom trim.

Make a DIY t-shirt

Pin and sew

Pin the tape of the pom-pom trim to the hem of the shirt and sew.

Pocket patch

For this DIY, you will need a t-shirt with a pocket, an iron-on motif, an iron, and a dishtowel.

Place motif

Lay your shirt flat, and place the iron-on motif where you want it.

How to sew a DIY t-shirt

Iron

Cover the patch with a dishtowel. Turn the iron up to a high setting with steam, and iron over the patch.

Flip the shirt over, and iron over the patch from the other side, as well.

Contrasting sleeves

For this DIY, you will need a short-sleeved t-shirt, contrasting fabric, a seam ripper, scissors, pins, and a sewing machine.

Easy DIY t-shirt

Rip the seams

With a seam ripper, remove the sleeves from the t-shirt. Then open the side seam and hem of one of the sleeves.

Beginner DIY t-shirt

Pin and cut

Pin the opened sleeve onto your contrasting fabric. Cut the fabric using the sleeve as your guide.

Sew

Fold up the flat edges of the new sleeves, and sew them down to create a hem. 

Pin and sew

Pin and sew the new sleeves onto the t-shirt.


Racing stripe t-shirt

For this DIY, you will need a short-sleeved t-shirt, a roll of striped trimming, pins, and a sewing machine.

 

Pin and sew

PIn and sew the striped tape down the center of each sleeve.


Contrasting pocket

For this DIY, you will need a pocket pattern, contrasting fabric, scissors, pins, and a sewing machine.

Cut

Use the pocket pattern to cut out a piece of fabric for the pocket.

Fold, pin, and sew

Fold down the top edge of the pocket and topstitch it down with a contrasting thread. Pin the pocket to the shirt, and sew it down close to the edges.
