Cute DIY Crop Top Tutorial
Give your old clothes a second chance. Don’t throw away that old shirt yet. Instead, follow this DIY crop top tutorial to learn how to reuse the fabric of your old clothes to create an adorable new top with a ruched front and ruffled straps. This is a great project for beginners, so if you want to know how to make a DIY crop top out of an old shirt, keep reading.
Tools and materials:
- Old shirt
- Scissors
- Pins
- Safety pin
- Long stick
- Sewing machine
Cut
If the hem of the shirt is not straight, cut across the bottom hem.
Decide how long you want your crop top to be. Measure that amount from the bottom hem, and cut a straight line across the shirt.
Fold the rectangle of fabric in half, and cut just one layer of fabric along the fold.
Pin and sew
Fold the short edges over once about ½ an inch, and pin and sew them down.
Fold the raw edges along the top and bottom, and pin and sew them down, as well, stopping the stitching before reaching the hems on the short edges.
Cut
From the offcuts of the shirt, cut two strips, each about 1 inch wide.
Pin and sew
Fold the strips in half lengthwise, and pin and sew down the long edges and one short edge on each strip.
Turn right side out and sew
Use a long stick to push the fabric from the closed end of the strip through to the open end of the strip, and then pull the fabric through the opening to turn the strip right side out. Once both strips are right side out, sew them together.
Insert the strip
Attach a safety pin to one end of the long strip, and insert it into the opening along the bottom of one of the short edges of the top. Guide the safety pin through the fabric until you can pull it out through the opening at the top. Then repeat the process on the second short edge, this time inserting the safety pin at the top, and pulling it out the bottom opening.
Once the strip has been pulled through both sides of the front of the top, tie a bow.
Cut, pin, and sew
Cut two more strips to be used as shoulder straps. Fold each one in half lengthwise, and pin and sew them down.
Attach the shoulder straps
Pin the shoulder straps in place and sew them down.
Cut
From the offcuts of the shirt, cut two leaf-shaped pieces of fabric, equal in length to your shoulder straps. These will be the ruffles on the shoulder straps. Fold each one in half lengthwise, and pin and sew them down, leaving a ½-inch gap on one end.
Turn right side out and attach
Turn the ruffles right side out with a long stick, and attach one to the outside edge of each shoulder strap.
