How to Transform an Old T-shirt Into a Cute 2-piece Set
Do you want to transform your t-shirt from a boring shapeless shirt into a fabulously stylish top and shorts?
I’m going to show you how to upcycle an old t-shirt to reduce waste and freshen up your wardrobe.
Find an old t-shirt and follow along to make a fun crop top with matching shorts.
Tools and materials:
- Old t-shirt
- Scissors
- Needle
- Thread
- Pins
- Safety pin
1. Make your mark
Put on your t-shirt and figure out where you want to crop it. Mark it with a pin. Take off the shirt to begin the project.
2. Cut
Cut off the bottom half of the shirt.
Then cut the center of the front of the shirt from the bottom to the neckline.
Then start cutting upward from one edge of the bottom of the shirt at an angle and continue to cut up and around the neckline.
Continue cutting around the neckline and back down again to the bottom of the shirt opposite the side you started from.
3. Tie
Now that your shirt is cut open at the front, tie the bottom corners together in a small but secure knot.
The front of your old shirt is not the back of your soon-to-be-finished crop top.
4. Make some shorts
Let’s make sure we’re not creating any waste. We’re going to use the bottom half of the shirt for this part of the project.
Take a pair of shorts that fit you well. Tuck one pant leg into the other and lay it on top of the fabric from the bottom half of the shirt.
Use this to trace out your pattern. Cut around the shorts with the crotch facing one way. This will be the front of your new shorts.
Now flip the sample shorts so the crotch is facing the opposite direction. Use this to trace and cut out the back panel for your new shorts.
You will also want to cut about an inch off from the top of the fabric to use as a drawstring.
Open the pattern pieces you cut for the shorts and separate them.
Fold each in half aligning the edges for the crotch. Sew the inner leg together on each piece separately.
Then pin and sew the pieces together from the crotch.
5. Sew in the drawstring
Turn the shorts inside out, fold the waist down about half an inch and then sew.
Then cut a small hole to insert the drawstring. Use a safety pin to thread the drawstring into the waistband.
