Turn a Walmart napkin into a summer top. You can really do this with any cloth napkin, but I’m going to show you specifically how I do it with this particular napkin.

This way you can go buy the same one at your local Walmart and follow along to create the same top.

Tools and materials:

  • Cloth napkin
  • Rope or ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or thread and needle
  • Iron
  • Safety pin
Cutting napkin

1. Cut and iron

Cut off the fringe off the shorter sides of the rectangle.

Ironing napkin

Fold those edges in about 2 inches. Iron them down to keep them folded in place.

Sewing

2. Sew and thread

Sew two straight stitches along the ends of the fold about ¼ inch apart from each other and inch from the fold.

Sewing

Do the same on the other end.

String

Take two long pieces of string or ribbon. You can measure around your body to see how long the strings should be.

It doesn’t have to be precise. You just need enough string to go around your body and easily tie.

Best to leave them on the long side. You can always trim them later if they’re too long.

Adding string

Use a safety pin to thread the string through the folds.

Thread one through the top fold and the other through the bottom fold.

Trying shirt on

3. Try it on

Put the shirt on the front of your body and tie the strings back to keep the top in place.
