Here, I’m going to be taking a large pair of pink shorts and upcycling them to create a matching top and bag.

If you have a pair of shorts that are way too big and you have absolutely no use for, follow along to see how you can transform them into two pieces that you’ll love.

Tools and materials:

  • Large shorts
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
Oversized pants

Cutting out pockets

1. Cut out the pockets

First, cut out the area where the front and back pockets are.

Adding strip

2. Add strip to the sides

Add a strip of fabric to the open sides to close them up.

Sewing strip down

3. Sew strip down

Sew the strip of fabric down, turn the fabric right side out, and boom, you have a bag.

Adding handles

4. Add handles

Use the waist tie strings to make the handles. Sew them to either side of the top of the bag.

Cutting out strips

5. Cut out strips

Now go back to the other side of the shorts to make a matching top. Cut out strips of fabric.

Laying strips out

6. Lay strips out

Then lay them out in a brick pattern and sew them together to make a one-shoulder top.

DIY matching set

Here are the finished pieces.

The bag has a front pocket, a back pocket, and a main pocket. It’s super roomy and gives me space to put everything I need inside.

This is the finished top. I love the layered strips and think they give the top a really unique appearance.
