Tools and materials:
- Hair brush
- Hair tie
- Curling iron (optional)
- 1 clear hair elastic
1. Make a loop bun
Leave out some face framing hair on either side of your face. Then collect the rest of your hair into a ponytail at the back of your head (not on top).
On your last twist of the hair tie, pull your hair into a loop bun with a tail.
2. Make a hole and pull the bun under and through it
Split the tail into 2 and put them in front of your shoulders, out of the way for now.
Create a hole right above the bun.
Then flip the bun under and through the opening, almost like a topsy tail.
Real talk: my hair got completely tangled here! I realized that twisting the hair tie around 4 times was too tight. I redid the steps until this point, but only twisted the hair tie 3 times.
I also made sure to pull the bn outward slightly from the back of my head to allow for more room. Also, make sure the tails don’t get tucked into the topsy tail maneuver.
After flipping the bun under and through the opening, pull at the top to the sides to widen the bun.
3. Make it messy
Here’s where we’re at right now:
In the original tutorial, the woman makes it really messy, so pinch and pull generously with your fingers to achieve that effect.
4. Add waves if your hair is very straight
I felt this messy bun updo would work even better with wavy hair. Curl the face framing pieces.
Then curl the ends in the back.
5. Address longer hair
In the original tutorial, the tails are meant to be left out of the bun. But my hair is longer and I was getting mullet vibes. My solution is to tie the tails into a smaller bun with a hair elastic.
Pull it out to either side.
Then make another topsy tail bun.
Here’s the final look for this messy bun updo:

If you have short hair, you can get away with just 1 topsy tail bun. But if your hair is longer, definitely try the double bun.
I hope you loved this viral bun hack as much as I do! If you try it out, let me know what you think in the comments. Next, try this easy beauty hack for a natural makeup look.
