If you have cute summer hairstyles on the brain, I have just the thing for you!

Follow along with this step-by-step tutorial and create this easy, messy bun updo with me.

This messy bun updo hairstyle will work for my length of hair, longer, or really for anyone who can put their hair up in a ponytail.

However, if you have especially thick, heavy hair, this messy bun updo might not be for you.

Tools and materials:

  • 2 hair ties
  • 2 bobby pins
  • Small curling wand (optional)

1. Collect your hair into a ponytail

With boho hairstyles, I always like to leave out face-framing pieces on either side.

Then collect the rest of your hair into a ponytail that’s not too high or too low.

Since this is a messy bun updo hairstyle, there’s no need to try to slick back the hair.

Tying hair into a ponytail

Tighten the ponytail. You can see where it rests at the back of my head:

I recommend using really stretchy, high-quality hair ties that won’t leave you with a headache.

2. Split your ponytail, squeeze and secure a bun

Split your ponytail into 2 even sections, 1 on top of the other.

Splitting the ponytail

Rest the top section toward your face. Then squeeze the 2 sections together at the base of the ponytail.

Use a 2nd hair tie to hold this bun in place. Then bring all the ends down, below the bun.

Adding volume to the bun

3. Add volume to the bun

Grip the bun between the 2 sections and pull. This will also help bring the bun closer to the head so it’s not jutting out.

Make sure you don’t overdo the pulling because you want to avoid a saggy bun.

4. Halve, wrap, cross and pin the ends

Split the ends in half and twist each around your fingers.

Styling the bun

Bring them up and over the bun and criss-cross them. Then bring them back down, below the bun.

Adding bobby pins

Secure each side with a bobby pin under the bun.

Adding bobby pins

Use your fingers to gently spread out the hair, so it’s less tail-like.

Adding volume to the bun

5. Add volume to the crown and below the bun

Pinch and pull at the hair on the crown of your head to add volume to this messy bun updo.

Adding volume to the bun

Do the same for the hair underneath the bun.

This easy summer hairstyle is basically complete.

If you need to refresh with some curls, use a small curling wand on those face-framing pieces.

I love this cute summer hairstyle because it’s easy to create and you can dress it up or down.

Too complicated for me; way above my pay grade. Definitely looks wonderful though! I mostly wear my hair 'up' so would be great if I could figure out how to do it. Directions weren't clear enough for this old lady. Patricia
