I am so obsessed with straw, woven bags! They are so in right now and I really wanted to get one to add to my accessory collection. When I looked into buying one, I realized that these trendy woven bags were going for a pretty penny. Rather than spend all that money, I thrifted a woven bag and totally transformed it to create the most amazing DIY bag that is exactly what I was looking for. Check out my tutorial below to learn the ins and outs of this awesome bag upcycle.
Tools and materials:
- Straw bag
- Ribbon
- Fabric squares
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
Remove the lining
This thrifted bag came with a blue lining that I wasn’t the biggest fan of. I started my DIY project by removing the lining from the bag. I used scissors to rip the seams all the way around and then took out the lining.
Make a new lining
I then took the lining apart by opening all the seams. I decided to use the original lining pieces as a template to create a new lining for my awesome straw bag. I placed the blue lining pieces on my white fabric and pinned them down. I then cut around the template pieces to get new lining pieces from the white fabric.
I matched up the sides of my new lining and hand sewed the pieces together. If you have a sewing machine, feel free to use it! I turned the lining, right side out, and put it inside the bag.
Attach new handles
For the new handles, I used this awesome canvas-like ribbon. I cut two equal pieces and sewed them on the inside of the bag between the lining and straw. I made sure to sew the lining, all around the top, at the same time! I totally love the canvas and straw together!
Add finishing touches
For the finishing touch, I decided to add a cute little bow to the bag. I made the bow from the canvas ribbon and I sewed it onto the base of the handle.
This woven straw bag is everything! What other details would you add to this refashioned bag? Let me know in the comments below!

So how did you attach the lining to the inside of the bag? Did you sew it to the straw?
Thank you, but I wasn't referring to the bow. I am wondering how you attached the lining of the bag to the straw purse. Did you sew the lining to the straw bag? Not sure how you would do this.
love the 'not-tied' bow. adds the finishing touch to a really cute
make-over.
