This is the Easiest Maxi Skirt You’ll Ever Sew
Maxi skirts are fun, especially when the sun is out and the weather calls for a lovely, flowy maxi skirt. I'm going to show you how to sew a chiffon maxi skirt in no time so that you can look and feel your best for almost any occasion! You don't really need a maxi skirt pattern either, and I will supply you with all of the necessary measurements. I can't wait to show you how fun and easy the process is. You will probably want to make more than one when you see the result. Let's get cracking!
Tools and materials:
- Sewing Machine
- Lining fabric
- Chiffon fabric
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Elastic
- Thread
- Safety Pin
Measure the fabric accordingly
As you can see, these are the measurements that you will need for both the chiffon fabric and the undergarment fabric. So, before you start, go ahead and make sure your fabric is cut to size accordingly.
Sew the chiffon fabric piece
Now that you have two separate pieces of fabric cut to size continue with this step. Fold your chiffon fabric in half, face the wrong sides of the fabric together, pin the side seams, and sew along the edge.
Then, cut as much excess fabric as you can, turn the fabric inside out and sew the seams again. This will help prevent fraying and will give your maxi skirt a polished look.
TIP-
Before you sew the skirt's edge again, pin the sides as this fabric is super slippery, and you need to hold it in place while sewing.
Sew the undergarment lining piece
Now do the same process with the lining piece. The only difference with this fabric piece is that I joined two pieces together, as shown.
Sew the pieces together
Now place your lining underneath your chiffon dress and pin the tops together. Make sure the side seams match up. You will notice that the chiffon fabric is way bigger than the linings, don't worry, this is on purpose as you will be adding ruffles along the circumference.
Sew the pieces together, and as you can see, the maxi dress has a ruffle-like effect.
Add the belt
Make a belt from the lining's fabric and the chiffon's fabric. So that you have two separate pieces, sew both the pieces together along the edges.
Place the belt's bottom edge to the maxi skirt's top seam, pin, and sew.
Next, fold over the remaining fabric over the maxi skirt's waistline and pin in place.
Sew around with a topstitch, leaving a little gap open to feed through the elastic. Once sewn, attach a safety pin to the end of your elastic and feed it through the gap's opening.
Once the elastic is in place, join the ends and sew. Stitch the gap closed and hem the bottom of the dress.
You’re done! I told you it would be easy! I think this easy DIY maxi skirt is amazing, fun, and simple to make. It’s also great for beginners. I am super chuffed with the result. I love the flowy look of it, and I love that it can be worn in so many styles. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and I hope you maxi’ it out!
