Have leftover scraps from an old project or just a piece of clothing you don’t really wear, but you love the fabric?

Try this ribbon hack to put those scraps to use!

Tools and materials:

  • Old fabric
  • Scissors
  • Lighter
  • Needle and thread
Cutting fabric

1. Cut your fabric into strips

To make ribbons, you’ll need to cut your fabric into strips. I cut off the sleeves of this old dress for its beautiful lace fabric.

Lighting edges

2. Light the edges

Grab a lighter and run the flame along the rough edges. This will help prevent the fabric from fraying where you cut it.

Sewing

3. Sew the scraps together

If your fabric isn’t long enough for your ribbons, sew the scrap pieces together with needle and thread until it’s as long as you like.

Then, the ribbons should be done! You can use them however you like.

I did a simple three-strand braid with the ribbon and tied a bow at the end.

This method is a great way to make a bunch of uniquely-textured and colorful ribbons to complement your everyday wardrobe.
