Jewellery Trends for 2023 - Living a Real Life

I’m pleased to see that, jewellery seems to be moving away from the dainty, delicate pieces we’ve been seeing over the past two years to the more chunky, bold statement pieces. If you know me, you’ll know that this suits me perfectly as I love those big bold pieces and even when I try to make the delicate ones, they always turn out to be something bold.

1 Mermaid

I added this first trend is as a bit of fun. I love this trend but what does ‘mermaid’ actually mean in terms of jewellery? It really means beachy and soft kind of moon glow colours. Use those softer blues and greens – if they have some sparkle or glitter all the better, and add some shell or starfish charms. Also, incorporate some sea glass or sea glass colours. You get extra credit if you throw in a mermaid tail charm.

I made this summer anklet way back in May 2021 but it would absolutely fit the bill.

2 Pearls (especially jumbo ones).

Pearls are always on trend but this year they are going bigger, but any pearls will do! Whether they be coloured or natural, large or small.

Pearls can be understated and traditional like this bracelet.

Or large and a statement piece.

3 Large Earrings

This leads to the next trend which is large earrings. Not sure about you, but I find large earrings can be difficult, especially if they are heavy. I don’t mind long ones, but they need to be light. This type of cuff earring is also right on trend for 2023.

Of course, there are so many options when it comes to large, statement earrings.

I’ve made lots of statement earrings over the years. Probably my favourite are these ones:

4 Fringe Detail

This leads me to the next trend which is fringe detail. We are seeing lots of fringes in clothing like this amazing beaded fringed jacket. I can imagine all you beaders running out to make this one!

And we’re also seeing fringes in jewellery too. What about these gorgeous earrings by Valentino.

These ones retail for over $2000 but I’m sure you can come up with a similar design.

5 Bold Bangles

Bold bracelets and bangles are also on trend this year. Personally, I find this trend of wearing multiple large bangles stacked up your arm entirely impractical, but if you love it, go for it.

Cuffs especially are making a comeback. You can probably achieve this look by wearing several memory wire bracelets together, or of course there are resin bangles and leather cuffs to make as well.

It might be a good time to pull out the memory wire and make this braided cuff bracelet.

6 Punk Details

If you lived in my house you wouldn’t be surprised by this revival of punk, because my son has been listening to punk music a lot lately - it seems to be enjoying somewhat of a revival. The details of punkness in today’s trends are a little more subtle than that of the 70s. It’s showing itself in heavy chains and the odd safety pin.

If you’re looking to wear this trend, this spikey necklace I made would work well.

Or, you could make this one which features spikes and bones.

7 Personalised Jewellery

Personalised jewellery is an interesting trend. I’ve never been into it, but I must admit to wearing an identity bracelet when I was young. This year’s trends are must bolder but still very tasteful.

8 Brooches

I’m so excited about this trend. Just recently, someone told me that brooches were nana. I said, no way, because I just love brooches. Now I have scientific backing (well the trend reports anyway) to back me up.

This one is meeting the tassel trend as well as the brooch trend.

What about this, look at all these wonderful brooches – I love how she’s worn these as a grouping to make a statement. I could really see myself wearing brooches like this. Wear one, or wear many, it’s up to you.

Of course, if you’ve been watching for a while, you’ll know that I had a bit of a disaster with this brooch, but it all turned out well in the end. I’m looking forward to making more brooches this year.

9 Hearts

Hearts are playing a huge part in jewellery this year – they are literally everywhere. They are bigger and bolder than the dainty ones we’ve seen in recent years. Leave your charms at home and go big.

I love how this necklace uses both pearls and hearts to make its statement.

Obviously, the heart tassel earrings I showed you earlier also play into this trend – hearts and tassels – whoo hoo, I hit both trends!

Colours

10 Dark Jewellery

I also hit two trends with this necklace that I made last year. Hearts and the next trend which is dark jewellery.

I’ve been wearing dark coloured jewellery for years because I need the contrast of a little bit of dark, so I’m really excited that jewellery is moving towards the dark side.

This dark and moody bracelet would be perfect as it hits several of these trends on the mark.

11 Mixed Metals

Mixing metals used to be a big no, no but in recent years it’s been happening more. Personally, I like it.

This bracelet I made uses glass beads that appear to be mixed metals, so it’s a trick, but it would definitely work for this trend.

12 Emerald

The last trend that I want to talk about is an interesting one. The colour emerald. Over the last couple of years, there hasn’t really been a ‘trend colour’ in jewellery but this year there is. Emerald is everywhere!

I absolutely love this colour and it works for most cool toned people. That doesn’t mean if you’re warmed toned you can’t wear it, just pair emerald with warm toned metals or use it in moderation. You could also warm it up a bit. If you remember I made this emerald necklace for my sister last year.

Conclusion

While it’s interesting to know that the trends are, it’s also important to be true to yourself. If you love the trend, wear it, if you don’t love it, don’t. Make it your own and alter it to suit yourself. For example, I can’t see myself wearing large bangles up to my elbow but I can wear double ups of multi-strand bracelets like I am today. If you don’t love dark jewellery, stick to light but incorporate another of the trends, for example silver hearts.

It's really up to you how you incorporate these trends into your jewellery wardrobe.
