Styling Shorts for Fall

Wear shorts in cold weather? It's possible! Fall is a great time for layers and trying different combinations with the pieces in your wardrobe. That includes your shorts! The cooler season is also the time to bring out your tights in bold colors and textures.

Tights (also known as stockings) refer to legwear that is slightly thicker and more opaque than pantyhose but not as thick as leggings. They can be worn under skirts, dresses and even pants for an extra layer to keep your legs warm or add a bit of color and texture to an outfit.

I decided to try some outfits that would stretch my summer shorts into the cooler fall months, and tights were the perfect pairing. Before we start, knowing the right shorts you feel comfortable in is important. The most common lengths are:

Short shorts: Inseam 1-3”

Midi shorts: Inseam 4-6”

Walking shorts: Inseam 7-9”

Bermuda shorts: Inseam 10+”

I prefer the midi and walking shorts range, and I found this is a good length to wear with tights, as the Bermuda length tends to start looking a little frumpy when you layer it up.

Here are some ideas for styling shorts for fall.

Shorts with Tights and Sweater

Try styling your shorts with basic black tights and a chunky sweater for a casual look with a little prep. A loose-fitting cable knit jumper is relaxed yet adds polish paired with khaki shorts and ankle booties.

If you’re looking for an edgy look to wear to a concert or a night on the town, pair shorts with a graphic t-shirt, motorcycle jacket, combat boots and textured tights such as lace or fishnet. For extra leg warmth, put some nude pantyhose under your fishnets. This toughens up the playful look for your inner rock star.

Shorts with Colored Tights and Poncho

The shorter the shorts, the longer your legs will look. Try a pair of short shorts with tights in a bold color to add pop. Throw on a poncho and knee-high boots for a chic look that works for any casual outing.
