Updos for long hair are perfect for any special occasion: birthdays, proms, weddings, and holidays. If you have some Christmas parties coming up, you are going to want to follow this tutorial for Christmas hair updos. There are two different party updos here, so try them both!

Tools and materials:

  • Curling iron
  • Hair elastics
  • Hair clips
  • Bobby pins


Christmas updo 1

Prepping hair ready for the updo

1. Prep hair

Use a curling iron to add some curl to your hair before creating an updo. It will give texture and volume to your Christmas updo and look so much more glamorous.


Section off the sides of your hair and pin it at the back of your head.

Dividing hair into sections

2. Divide hair into 3 sections

Now divide all of your hair into 3 equal sections. Pin the two side sections out of the way and make a ponytail with the middle section.

Wrapping hair into a small bun

3. Wrap the updo bun

Wrap the ponytail around itself to make a small bun. Add bobby pins to the bun as needed to hold it in place.

French braiding hair

4. French braid the side sections

Take one of the front sections of hair and create a French braid with it, following the directions in the video from 1:12 – 1:33.

Twisting the side section of hair

5. Twist

Once you have run out of hair for the French braid, continue with a regular hair twist to the bottom of the section.

 

6. Pinch and pull the braid

Then, gently pinch and pull each section of braid to loosen it slightly.

7. Wrap the braid

Take the braid that you just created and wrap it around the bun from top to bottom. Add bobby pins as you go to keep the bun secure.

Repeat the same braid, twist, and wrap on the other side of your head.

8. Create texture

Pinch and pull the twists at the top of your head to add texture. Loosen some strands at the front of your head for a softer look.

Pinning a section of hair at the back

1. Pin sections of hair

Take a small section of hair from the top of one side of your head, twist it, and pin it at the back of your head.

Do the same with a section from the top of the other side of your head.

2. Pinch and pull

Pinch and pull the twist at the top of your head slightly to add some volume.

3. Wrap hair into a bun

Divide your hair into 3 sections. Make a ponytail with the middle section and wrap it into a bun. Use bobby pins to secure the bun in place.

4. Twist and drape

From one of the side sections of hair, divide the section into two sections. Now, take the back of the two sections, twist and pull it and then drape it over the top of your bun across the back of your head. Bobby pin that section into place.

Now do the same on the other side section, draping it across to the other side of your head.

5. Pull sections through the loops

Pull this section through the loop made by the previous section that draped across. Bobby pin that strand through the opposite side of the bun.

DIY Christmas hairstyles

Take the last section of hair from the first side of your head, twist it, and drape it across the middle of your bun, hiding the original bun. Pin it in place.

Take the last section of hair from the second side of your head, drape it across the bun and pull it through the loop made by the last section you draped across. Pin it in place.

6. Add volume and texture

Pinch and pull the sections of hair loosely to add volume and texture. Tuck in or drape and wrap any loose strands at the back of your neck.
