How to Sew a Buttonhole
Here, I’m going to show you the easy way to sew a buttonhole from start to finish.
If you’re looking to improve your sewing skills, being able to sew a button is definitely something that you’ll want to know how to do.
Let me show you how to do it!
Tools and materials:
- Sewing machine
- Fabric
- Button
- Buttonhole foot
- Seam ripper
- Fray Check
- Cutting mat
- Chisel
1. Choose correct settings
On your sewing machine, first change the stitch type to the buttonhole setting and then widen the stitch length.
2. Add buttonhole foot
Next, take your buttonhole foot and place your button into the button slot.
3. Set sewing machine
Place your buttonhole foot onto the sewing machine with the button facing towards the back.
Then, pull the lever down and push it towards the back.
4. Sew buttonhole
Next, place your fabric under the presser foot and start sewing.
The buttonhole setting on your machine is automatic, so the only thing you need to do is guide your fabric.
The sewing machine is going to do the rest.
5. Remove excess thread
After you’re done sewing, take a seam ripper or some scissors and cut off the excess thread that is left over from the buttonhole.
6. Apply Fray Check
Next, take Fray Check (a seam sealant) and place it in the center of your buttonhole.
This is going to prevent your buttonhole from fraying when we cut it open.
7. Cut hole open
Once the Fray Check is dry, place the fabric onto a cutting mat and then cut it open.
I’m using a chisel, but a seam ripper or scissors would work as well.
Now we have the completed button!
