Two Easy Upcycled Denim Jacket Ideas
Hello and welcome to my denim jacket upcycled tutorial.
I purchased two denim jackets at a thrift store. Neither of them fit perfectly, so I decided to make some adjustments.
One denim jacket upcycle required some shortening on the sleeves. The other was a bit small so I decided to make a jacket and hoodie combo.
Follow along to learn some simple upcycling techniques.
Best fabric scissors!
Tools and materials:
- Needle
- Thread
- Scissors
- Friction marker
- Ruler
- Sewing machine
- 1 hoodie
- 2 denim jackets
Jacket 1: Shortening the sleeves
To shorten the sleeves, put a pin where you want the sleeve to finish.
Then use a seam ripper to unstitch the cuff.
Now use a ruler to measure and cut the extra fabric off the sleeve.
Sew a line around the edge of the sleeve where you want to attach the cuff.
This will serve as a guide. You’re basically just drawing a line with a thread.
Put the edge of the cuff right against that line and pin it in place.
If your sleeve has a bit of a taper to it like mine did, make a small pleat near the buttonhole.
Once everything is properly pinned, simply sew it together and you’re done!
Jacket 2: Jacket and hoodie combo
Start by cutting the sleeves off the denim jacket. Cut off about ¼ inch into the sleeve.
Now you have a denim vest to combine with your hoodie.
For mine, in addition to using the sleeves, zipper, and hood, I decided to use the bottom of the hoodie as well to extend the length of the jacket.
The armholes of the denim jacket were a bit too tight for me so I decided to drop the armhole down a bit by cutting away another inch under the arms.
Use a friction pen to draw the lines where the hoodie and jacket overlap, but that’s not where you’re going to be sewing.
The stitching will go in another inch.
Once everything is marked, you can cut away the excess from the body of the hoodie leaving about an inch all around.
Remove the lines of the friction marker with an iron.
Serge the edges to prevent fraying.
Pin the body of the jacket to the body of the hoodie. Line the center back of the jacket to the center back of the hoodie to make sure everything will sit nice and straight.
Sew everything together and wherever possible stitch along the already existing stitching of the jacket so it will look a bit more natural.
Make any other additional adjustments you want.
For example, I decided to bring my jacket in a bit at the waist to customize it to fit my body just right.
