Who doesn’t love a big, messy hairdo? Channel your inner bad-gal and try a curly faux hawk with me!

The messy texture leaves plenty of room for imperfections and it can easily be recreated in no time. Rock this style with formal attire or a trendy ensemble for a night out.

Tools and materials:

  • Nylon brush
  • 3 large elastics
  • Bobby pins
  • Hairspray
  • Curling wand
Parting hair

1. Make a rough parting above the ears

You can curl your hair like I did or simply start this look with any kind of texture.

Then make a rough parting above each ear. It doesn’t have to be perfect–that’s the beauty of this hairstyle!

2. Hold a half ponytail

Using a nylon brush, smooth the entire section of hair in front of the ears into a sleek, half ponytail.

3. Make a loop bun

Make the half ponytail as tight as possible, and at the last twist of the ponytail holder, make a loop bun.

Making loop bun

Turn the tail end toward the front, adjusting it to the point where you want it to fall toward your face.

Pull the bun with your fingers to create more volume to the sides.

3. Make a 2nd bun

Start your 2nd section behind your ears, going upward toward the back. Use your nylon brush to smooth out the sides.

Making loop bun

Tie the elastic around the tail as tightly as you can, but this time when you make the loop bun, let the tail end hang down, toward your neck.

Combining the buns

4. Combine the 2 buns

Next, pinch the buns together and combine them with a bobby pin on either side.

5. Tuck and pin the ends

Grab the loose ends from the 2nd bun and tuck them underneath it with bobby pins.

6. Create the final bun and secure it to the 2nd bun

Use your brush to collect and smooth the rest of the loose hair into a 3rd ponytail.

Creating loop bun

Create the final loop bun upward, toward the previous bun. The tail end should point down your neck.

Creating loop bun

Pull the final bun upward to meet the 2nd and attach them together with a bobby pin.

Creating loop bun

Continue securing this bun to the previous bun with several bobby pins until you’ve achieved an overall, tall and lean, curly faux hawk.

7. Hide the last elastic

To conceal the elastic band, tuck a piece of hair from the tail end into the elastic.

8. Apply hairspray and smooth

Apply hairspray generously to the sides.

Then use the nylon brush to smooth down the hair on the sides.

9. Refine the curls in the front

Detail the curls that sit in the front. I’m using a 19 mm barrel wand.

Grab the frizziest pieces and alternate the direction of the curl for nice movement.

Finish with generous amounts of hairspray and you’re done!
