Here is a trio of cute, easy fall hairstyles for medium and long hair that are so perfect for this time of year. I’ll show you how I make a gorgeous and textured side braid, a low messy bun, and a beautiful headband made of braids. Let's get into it!

Tools and materials:

  • Brush or comb
  • Texture spray
  • Clear hair elastics
  • Ponytail elastics
  • Bobby pins
Braiding hair in a side part

Textured side braid,

1. Make the first braid

Part your hair to one side. Grab the hair in the middle. Make sure it is free of knots and tangles. Make a regular 3-strand braid. Secure the braid with an elastic at the bottom.

Adding hair to the braid

2. Add to the braid

Start at the top of the braid and poke a finger through the top crossover of the braid to create a space. Take a small chunk of hair from the front of your hair.

Put another finger into the hole at the top of the braid and pull that chunk through.

Now, take the other side of the top of the braid to create a hole there. Pull a small chunk of hair from the backside of the hair. You may need to twist the hair to keep it together. Pull it through the other hole.

Keep doing this all the way down the original braid: Take a section and pull it through. On the braid’s backside, you’ll pull hair from the front. From the braid’s front side, you’ll pull hair from the back.

Adding more hair to the braid

You may need to twist the hair to get it to lay smooth and tangle-free. Take from underneath and not from the section you already did. Keep taking from the bottom so all the hair is in the braid. Keep going all the way to the bottom.

3. Secure the braid

Once you’ve reached the bottom of the braid, use a clear hair elastic. Remove the original braid elastic. Take a strand of your hair from below the elastic and wrap it around the clear elastic.

Using a bobby pin to keep the tie secure

Tuck a bobby pin in the back to keep your “hair tie” secure.

Adding texture to the braid

4. Texture the braid

Gently pull on the braid at even intervals to create texture. If your hair is very layered, some pieces may fall out. Simply tuck them back in.

5. Complete the look

Arrange the front of your hair. I tucked a piece into the braided area. Some hair may not stay in place in the back. Use a pretty barrette or clip at the back to keep the back of the hair looking neat. To even everything out, you may need to pull some hair on the other side.

How perfect is this look for cozy fall evenings?

Pinching hair to create texture and volume

Low messy bun

1. Put the hair in a bun

First, spray texture spray all over the hair. Leave some hair out in the front to frame your face. Put a ponytail elastic midway down the back of the head. Wrap the elastic until it is very secure.

Pinch or pull the hair on the top of the head on the sides, working your way up to the crown to add texture and volume.

Making a knot with the hair

2. Tie a knot with hair

Divide the pony into 2 equal parts. Make a knot with the hair just like you were tying your shoes.

Flipping the knot to the top

3. Flip the knot

Once you’ve made the knot, flip the knot up at the top. Put some bobby pins in to keep it secure. You may need a few so that the bun won’t move.

4. Secure the bun

Take one of the ends that were hanging down from the knot and twist it. Wrap it around the base of the bun and then tuck in with a bobby pin. Then, take the other piece and twist it. Wrap it around the base going the other way. Tuck it in as well.

5. Finish the look

Go around the bun, gently tug at some areas, fluff some areas - basically, pinch and pull the hair - to make it look nice and messy.

Creating a small braid

Headband braids

1. Make the first braid

Pulling the braid across the head

2. Place the braid across the head.

Take the braid and pull it across the head. Bobby pin the braid in place.

Creating a second braid

3. Make the second braid

Take a large section of hair from underneath on the opposite side, Make another 3-strand braid. Secure with a clear hair elastic. Pull the second braid over the head and behind the first braid. Secure at the other side of the head with a bobby pin.
