Painting the dowel black

1. Make the cigarette holder

The first step on how to make a flapper dress costume is making the key accessory - the cigarette holder! So, grab a dowel and paint ¾ of it in black.

Painting the tip of the dowel gold

Now paint the tip gold- this serves as the “mouthpiece.”

Wrapping tape around one end

On the opposite end, twirl a white piece of tape around the tip to make it look like a cigarette.

Hot gluing the flapper headpiece

2. Make the headpiece

For the flapper costume headpiece, cut a long piece of some sparkly, sequined fabric. Then, fold the raw edges inward and glue them to secure.

Folding and gluing the short ends

Fold in and glue the short ends, too.

Measuring elastic for the headpiece

Now, measure your head and determine how long your black elastic should be. Then, glue the ends to the short ends of the headpiece.

Adding feathers and jewels to the headpiece

Go ahead and add some feathers or sparkly jewels to the side of the flapper costume headpiece.

Covering the ends of the feathers with fabric

To hide the ends of the feathers, cut a small piece of fabric and glue it over, as shown.

Making the shawl for the DIY flapper costume

3. Make the shawl

So, to make the shawl for this last-minute flapper costume DIY, simply take some faux fur fabric and cut it to size. Mine was 2½ feet wide and 1½ feet wide.

Pinning the corners to make a shawl

Then, pin the two corners together to make the armholes.
