How to Do a Cute Dutch Fishtail Braid - Step-by-Step Tutorial
This Dutch fishtail braid has been showing up on Instagram a lot lately. This step-by-step method on how to do a Dutch fishtail actually works best on hair that was last washed two days earlier, so it’s a perfect solution for when you have a little time and need something stylish.
Tools and materials:
- Comb
- Hair tie
1. Begin the Dutch fishtail braid
Start with a side part in your hair, even if you don’t normally part your hair that way. If your hair is really fine, you can add some volumizer to it first.
Take two 1-inch sections of hair from the top front of your head opposite the part.
Now take a small section of hair from behind the two sections you just took. Pass it underneath the second section and add it to the first section.
Repeat the previous step for the first section of hair. Take a small section from in front of the first section, pass it under the first section and add it to the back section. You will end up with a crisscross of hair.
Continue picking up and crossing over sections as before, but now each time you do, pick up two small sections, pass them under and incorporate. You will continue maintaining two sections as you go. Stop when you get to the middle of your forehead.
Tip: pull the braid tight continually as you go. You will pause periodically to loosen the loops.
2. Add to the Dutch fishtail from the other side
Once your fishtail braid has reached the middle of your forehead you are going to start incorporating hair from the other side of your head.
Use your index finger to scoop a section of hair from the front of the parted side of your head. Swoop that section around the back of your head, pass it under the back section and incorporate it in the front section.
Take a small section from the front of the original side you worked on, pass it under and incorporate it in the back section. At this stage, you should pause and loosen the braid loops again.
Continue incorporating hair from the front of both sides of your head until all your hair from the back of your head has been incorporated.
3. Finish off the Dutch fishtail braid
Then, just finish off the rest of your braid with regular fishtail braiding. Continue to loosen the braid loop as you go.
Tie off the end of your braid and soften the look by pulling out a few strands from the front on both sides.

i always wanted to do this fishtail braiding but I guess I’m not that good in following instructions. I really need a slow motion of show & tell video.
