How to Do a Faux Fishtail Braid: A Quick & Easy Faux Fishtail Hack

Fishtail braids are beautiful, but they can be difficult to do, especially on your own hair. Today, I’ll show you a faux fishtail braid that is quick and simple to achieve. You can use this easy hack to do one long fishtail braid or even two for a cute fall hairstyle. Let's get started.

Tools and materials:

  • Elastic
  • Brush

1. Tie your hair

Tie your hair to the side as shown.

2. Do the faux fishtail braid

Now, slide your hair tie down a little, and then create a hole above by splitting your hair into two sections.

Take your ponytail and flip it up through that hole.

Push all your hair through, and it should look something like this.

Take your hair tie, and move it down by about an inch.

Then, create another hole and go a little over to the right side (don’t section your hair in the middle again).

Next, flip your ponytail up through that hole.

It should look something like this. 

Tightening the braid to close the gap

As you can see, there’s a very open gap, so go ahead and tighten it to close that gap. 

Repeat this process all the way down, alternating sides as you go.

Put your hair up in a ponytail. Then, go a few inches down, and tie your hair with another ponytail.

Now, simply repeat the same steps as above. Create a hole in the middle, and flip your ponytail up through that hole.

Pull your hair tie by an inch or so and create a hole on the side and… repeat!

    Finally ~ a tutorial that's super easy to follow AND accomplish.
