How to Create a Simple Fishtail Braid Hairstyle

In this tutorial, I will show you how to do a fishtail braid step-by-step with pictures.
The fishtail braid hairstyle is a step up from the classic three-strand braid, and it’s a fun way to step up your everyday look.
Tools and materials:
- String/ribbon
- Hair elastic
1. Section the hair into two
Separate the hair you want to braid into two sections of equal size.
Here’s what this looks like on hair.
2. Add one strand of hair to the opposite section
Grab a small strand of hair on the outside of one section and join it to the inside of the opposite section.
It can be difficult to keep track of the strands when working with hair, but generally, the thicker side is the one you just added the hair to.
You should always be pulling hair from that side.
3. Repeat on the opposite side
Repeat step 2 on the other side, moving the outer strand to the inside of the opposite section.
Another trick to keep track of which side you’re working on is to look at how the hair is stacked.
The topmost layer will be the strand you just added.
4. Repeat the pattern all the way down.
Repeat steps 2 and 3, alternating sides to braid down the length of the hair completely.
As you work, try to grab the same size strand each time, so your braid doesn’t end up uneven or lumpy.
To avoid a loose braid, keep your fingers close to each other as you work.
5. Pull on both sides of the braids
Gently pull on both sides of the braid to add some volume to the braid.
If your braid is too tight or skinny, this is a great way to widen and loosen it.
