Don’t you just love those raffia drop earrings from Anthropologie? I think it’s such a cool look.

I wanted to see if I could make something similar for a lot less, and look what I found!

Tools and materials:

  • Child’s hula skirt
  • Large cord hoop earrings
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
Buying materials for DIY

1. Supplies

Grab a child’s hula skirt from a costume store. It’s the cheapest way I found to get the raffia.

You’ll also need a lightweight pair of hoop earrings in cord or similar, and some craft glue.

Cutting raffia

2. Cut the raffia

Cut about 6 pieces of raffia from the skirt. This was enough for both my earrings.

Gluing

3. Glue

Put a dab of glue on the cord at the top of the earring.

Gluing

Place the end of your first piece of raffia on the glue and wrap it around the cord.

Put a little more glue on the inside of the raffia, to hold the end in place.

Wrapping

4. Wrap

Start wrapping the raffia around the cord, keeping it as smooth and even as possible.

When you need to join in another piece, use another tiny dab of glue on the end.

Wrapping

Keep wrapping until the earring is completely covered with the raffia.

Glue the end of the last piece down.

I love this natural finish! As a bonus the skirts come in several colors. What do you think of my earrings?
