How to Make a Glittery, Gucci-Inspired DIY Turban Headband
If you want to learn how to make your own DIY turban headband, keep reading. It’s incredibly easy.
The first time I saw this Gucci turban headband, Chrissy Tiegen was wearing it, and I knew I had to have it. The only thing stopping me was the price tag, but I knew by looking at it that I could create an incredible dupe on my own.
The best part about making it DIY is that I can use any colors or pattern I want and I won’t feel limited by what’s currently in stock.
Tools and materials:
- Glittery fabric (or whatever fabric you want)
- Measuring tape
- A pair of scissors
- Elastic band
- Thread
- Needle
- Pins
1. Measure your head and cut the elastic
Measure the circumference of your head first, and then deduct four inches from the circumference. Then, measure and cut out your elastic for the remaining 4 inches.
When cutting your elastic, keep in mind that 4 inches is actually around 2.5 inches of elastic unstretched.
2. Sew the elastic
Place your now-cut elastic into the glittery fabric and fold it, right sides together, to correctly measure the width of your headband.
Hand-sew where the fabric meets the elastic, then turn it inside out. It should form a kind of pipe shape.
Weave the elastic through the “pipe” and sew up the end so the elastic is secure within the fabric.
Drag the elastic to the other end of the “pipe”. Use a pin or any other tool to help pull it out if necessary. Then, sew up this end. The fabric should be bunched up to accommodate the size of the elastic.
It should look like this.
3. Create the shape of the headband
Using the circumference you measured earlier, minus 4 inches, cut that length from your glittery fabric twice. You should have two equal parts of fabric now.
Fold the right sides again and sew together, then turn inside out. These should look similar to the “pipe” we created earlier, only larger.
Make sure the seam is right in the center of the fabric, and you shouldn’t see any stitches.
Take the two pieces of fabric and twist them around each other until you have something that looks like this. It should look kind of like a chain link.
4. Sew everything together
Next, pin the ends together. Try to align the stitches together, and hide them they no longer show.
Then, using a running stitch, sew all the way down to the very end until it’s about the same length (bunched up) as the elastic.
Align the elastic and the bunched ends and sew them together. Your stitches don’t have to be perfect here, so long as they’re sewed together.
Once secure, repeat on the other end. Remember to sew on the left side, as this is the side that will be facing your head and won’t be visible.
