Save on Salon Visits With This Super Easy Haircut Tutorial for Women
This haircut tutorial for women is so simple that I almost feel silly doing a whole tutorial on it. But this DIY hair trim technique is too good not to share!
Follow along and learn how you, too, can cut your hair at home, including long hair trimming, and getting rid of split ends. This technique works best for thin hair, like mine.
Tools and materials:
- Comb or brush
- Hair scissors
- Large wall mirror
- Smaller hand mirror
1. Get a good view!
Make sure you are standing in front of a large mirror when you’re cutting your own hair. You want a good view of what’s happening!
2. Prep for trimming
Start with freshly washed and air-dried hair and split your hair down the center at the back.
Comb it through very well. If you leave in any tangles, then those hairs will end up longer after you cut and the tangles do come out.
3. Ready to cut!
Bring both sides of your hair to the front, lying flat against your body.
Now, I’m facing the camera to demonstrate the cutting, but when you’re doing this at home, make sure you are facing your mirror and looking straight ahead.
Don’t look down at your hair – look straight into the mirror.
Sandwich the ends of both sides of your hair between your fingers, and use your hair scissors to trim the ends evenly across.
Take small snips across to keep the trim even and watch carefully as you go.
4. Check your results
Use a second mirror to see the back of your hair and check your results.
With long hair, you will cut the back into a slight V-shape.
It’s more obvious on thicker hair and more subtle, visually, on thinner hair like mine, which tends to be wispy.
Recheck your result by pulling your hair forward again, as you did at the beginning of step 3, and snipping any bits that are out of line.
Easy haircut tutorial for women
Here’s a look at the final result from my super-simple DIY hair trim.
I’ve been trimming my own hair like this for a couple of years, and it’s so easy to keep it neat and tidy this way.
If you try this yourself, start small – just do a little evening-up trim. As you get more confident, then if you want a more dramatic cut, you’ll be ready!

I have done this method before. Wearing a horizontal striped shirt helps to keep both sides the same length. Also, if the point when you brush your hair down your back is very noticeable just cut the point off to even up so it is straight across the back. Also dividing the hair a couple of times so ones side is fuller than the other and then cutting will get rid of the point in the back.
Yes, I probably will attempt it. My hair is natural curly, really thick and long. Hopefully it won’t look like a 4 year old went wild on me with a pair of kid scissors!? Lol. Thank you. Happy Holidays.
