Sewing the placemats together

1. Sew the placemats

Place your placemats right sides facing each other. Then, sew a line along the edges, ¾ of the way on both sides and one of the short ends. I love these placemats because they have thick edges that I can use as a guide when sewing a straight line.

Hand-sewing the sides of the placemats

Here, I decided to sew the sides with a needle and thread manually. You could also opt for fabric glue or use a sewing machine. Sew a simple stitch and make sure it’s straight and even for a lovely finish.

2. Marking the placemats

Next, take your measuring tape and measure 8 inches down from the open end of your placemats. Make a mark - this will be the point where you stop stitching.

When you've completed one side, turn the placemats around and repeat the process on the other side.

3. Sew the bottom short end

Now, sew along the bottom short end. Turn your DIY placemats bag inside out afterward.

Tip: Make sure to sew above the frayed edges.

4. Add the leather strap

Now, take your leather strap and sew it onto the corners of the bag. I used an old leather strap from a broken handbag, and it worked perfectly!

Sewing the strap ends to the bag

I’m using the pattern of the bag as a guide to ensure that they are nice and even. The black threaded part about 2 inches in is where I’ll be sewing on the ends of the straps.

Ensure that you don't sew through both layers; otherwise you’ll sew your purse together.

Tip: It is a little tough to sew through the leather, so you do have to add a lot of pressure to get your needle through.
