Gorgeous Glam Fanny Pack DIY
Today’s project is something I’ve wanted to do for over a year. Fanny packs have come back into style, and I saw someone at a friend’s wedding last year wearing a beautiful accessory piece which was, essentially, a fancy fanny pack. And it was stunning paired with the outfit this woman was wearing. I had no idea where she bought such a thing, so I decided to try and DIY it. And I think I figured out a way to do it with a little bit of thrifting. So follow along, and I’ll show you how I made a glam fanny pack with a thrifted purse.
Tools and materials:
- Clutch or small purse
- Chain
- Lobster clasps
- Jump rings
- String of beads (or other decorative items)
- Hot glue gun
- Chain nose pliers
- Needle and thread
- Scissors
Remove unwanted details
This is a purse that my mom gave me ages ago, and it’s kind of old and dirty. I started this project by removing some of the beading that made the purse look dated, or wasn’t in good shape. I only did this on the side that would be seen, but you can clean up both sides of the purse if you prefer.
Glue
Next, I decided to use a string of beads that I found at the thrift store a while ago as detailing for my fanny pack. I glued it carefully to the bottom edge of the purse with a hot glue gun.
Measure
Next, I measured how much of the chain I would need to go around my waist and attach to the purse. Make sure when you’re measuring, you subtract the width of whatever purse or pouch you’re working with. It does not need to reach all the way around your waist.
Open the chain
Using chain nose pliers, I opened one of the chain links and removed the excess chain.
Add a lobster clasp
Before closing up the chain, add a lobster clasp to the link.
Sew
Finally, I sewed a couple of jump rings onto the back of the purse, so I had a place to clip on the lobster clasps. I made sure to sew them far enough from the edge so the lobster clasps wouldn’t show. The jump rings I’m using are ones that I repurposed from the inside of this purse, but you can buy jump rings at any craft store.
And that’s it! My DIY fanny pack is done!
I think I did a pretty good job replicating the gorgeous fanny pack I saw at that wedding. What do you think of this unique accessory? What outfit would you wear it with?
