If you are someone who believes that a red lip should always be immaculate, then you have definitely come to the right place.

Here, I’m going to show you how to apply lipstick properly - no smudges, no messiness, just perfection. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Lip scrub
  • Wet wipe
  • Lip balm
  • Tissue
  • Foundation
  • Setting powder
  • Red lipliner
  • Red lipstick
  • Concealer pencil
  • Highlighter
  • Lipstick filler
Scrubbing lips

1. Scrub your lips

First off, start by scrubbing your lips with a lip scrub.

We don’t want any flakiness on the lips because flaky lips can make the red lipstick look terrible.

Just wipe that off with a clean wet wipe. You can also scrub your lips with a toothbrush if you want.

Moisturizing lips

2. Moisturize lips

Next, it is extremely important to moisturize your lips before applying any lip product.

Apply a lip balm and then blot off the excess oils on a tissue. You want to make sure that your lips are hydrated but matte at the same time.

Applying foundation

3. Apply foundation

Now it's time to add a little bit of foundation over your lips and then blend it out with the rest of your face. Then set your lips with a powder as usual.

Applying lip liner

4. Apply lip liner around lips

Lip liners are extremely important when you're wearing a super bright and bold lip color.

Here, I'm using a red lip liner, and I like to start at the center and then draw the line outward.

Doing this provides a guideline as to where you're going to apply your red lipstick, it makes the process of applying red lipstick much easier.

For the upper lip, I like to draw the cupid's bow first and then move on to the outer corners. It's extremely important that you do not forget to line the outer corners.

Filling in the lips

5. Fill in lips with lipliner

I also like to fill in my entire lips with the lip liner because this is not only going to act as a guideline, but it's also going to really make your red lipstick stand out.

It's going to make it extremely vibrant, and also it's going to increase the longevity of the lipstick, it's going to make it super long-lasting.

Applying lipstick

6. Apply lipstick

Now it's time for lipstick. If you want, you can always go ahead and apply it with a brush, but I find going straight from the bullet much easier.

With the lipliner on, you have a proper guide to your lip line.

Blotting lips

7. Blot lips

Since I prefer my red lips to be matte, I'm going to go ahead and blot them with a tissue.

This is not only going to keep it matte, but it's also going to make it long-lasting. Then repeat the same process of painting your lips and then blotting them one more time.

Applying concealer

8. Apply concealer around the edges

You can finish the tutorial here and head out like that, but if you are a bit of a perfectionist, then I would suggest going in with a concealer and cleaning out all the edges.

You want the edges to be extremely sharp and well-defined, so adding a bit of concealer is really going to help.

Adding highlighter

9. Add highlighter

Next, I like to add some highlighter to the cupid's bow, as doing this plumps up the upper lip.

Sucking on finger

10. Suck on your finger

A simple trick to keep that lipstick away from your teeth is to take a clean finger and suck on it, and all the lipstick that was supposed to go on your teeth lands up on your fingers.

This is an extremely helpful tip if you like wearing bright, bold colors.

Setting lips

11. Set your lips

Finally, to set your lipstick, you can either go ahead and grab some translucent powder and apply it to your lips.

Or, you can take a lipstick filler and guide it over your lipstick to ensure that your lipstick lasts all day - don't worry it dries matte.
